Movie Reviews of Heavy Metal (Collector's Edition)

Movie Review: Every red blooded American teenager should watch this film
Summary: 2 Stars

I am younger than many people reviewing this film, so I am ignorant to the cultural impact it may of made back in the day. One of my hobbies is renting bad horror movies with my friends such as Full Moon or Troma classics. On one fated night my friend recommended that we rent this film because the cover art looked delightfully cheesy. I had heard of Heavy Metal because I am a fan of cult films, so I was actually kind of excited to see it. I asked the video store clerk what he thought of it. He just looked at me with a straight face and said "Every red blooded American teenager should watch this film." I looked at him stunned and then he said "unless you're a hippy or something," obviously commenting on all my friend's long hair. Well I'm no hippy,so I rented it and discovered that it was probably very shocking back in the day. However it really has lost all of its shock value just because I grew up surrounded by cartoon boobies. I gave it two stars because there are certain animated sections that look beautiful even today and then soundtrack (Devo and Cheap Trick) really isn't to bad except for that Journey power ballad. (What the hell, Open Arms in a movie called Heavy Metal?) So unless you grew up in the eighties or you're just plain weird I would have to pass on this.

Movie Review: a snapshot in time
Summary: 4 Stars

oh, funny - saw this a bunch of times when it 1st came out. somehow got a bootleg VHS version of it in the late 1980's, was not quite as riveting as it was in 1981. we were a lot younger then! anyway - cheap trick's "reach out" is a crushing song, and blows me away to this day. man, did those guys put out the energy when they had a mind to...perfect for this movie. anyway - cannot imagine sitting through it 18 times now, at the age of 46. but it does bring a smile to my face to recall that awesome summer, tell you what!

Movie Review: Heavy Metal Memories
Summary: 3 Stars

The movie was not nearly as cool as I remembered, but it still brought back some great memories. It gave my adult children a laugh to see what interested me when I was a teenager. Apparently I have changed! The music on the copy that I bought was not as prominent as I recalled it was originally in the theater. I would buy it again.

Movie Review: "Boy, Eighteen Years Of Nothing And Then Twice In One Day!"
Summary: 4 Stars

If you're not a fan of heavy metal (talking about the music here) don't get scared off by this film's title, because odds are unless you're devoid of all appreciation of imagination, there'll still be something you like in these far-side-of-R-rated tales. Heck, I can't stand heavy metal, but I think Heavy Metal, an `80's offering from north of the border, kicks it tight.

This motion picture is a modern animation milestone that not only entertains even today in this nation, decade, and century, but for serious fans of the art form, this is simply not a presentation to be missed. Summoning the skills of too many illustrators to note here and utilizing a lot of creativity and voice talent, Heavy Metal's vignettes tell tales that are often striking contrasts from one another in structure, form, plot, and genre, yet together provide the sort of blast-off trip that compels your brain to open the doors to some of its oft-unused corners.

I used to watch Heavy Metal on a VHS tape with a friend as a teenager and honestly it is inexpressively better today on this crystal clear DVD release, especially since the issue of the ownership rights to this film caused its makers to spend literally twenty years languishing in various courts, unwillingly denying it to fans around the globe. The fact it is out there now, available and looking darn good for its age is something to be appreciated.

Be warned, however, Heavy Metal is animation but not a cartoon. In its ninety-minute run-time there's a bouncy, jolly, top-heavy brand of serious nudity, and enough lewdness and cussing to melt a church's floor wax. Yes, friends, the tales revealed in this movie are storytelling in the raw, but for those who can shrug all that off (or better yet enjoy it!) seeing this 4 ½ star classic is sure to be a rewarding experience.

Movie Review: Fun movie to kick back and watch.
Summary: 5 Stars

My only problem with this is the scene with Veterans of the Psychic War doesn't play out long enough to enjoy the whole song! As with any movie broken into pieces you'll have parts you love and other parts you could do without. I could watch an entire movie about the character who drives the taxi, Harry Canyon. It also is what introduced me to Dio and Sammy Hagar. I see comments about this being for 13 year olds, but I wouldn't agree. For me its like any cult film people enjoy, give it a try, you might have fun. If not, oh well.
