Movie Reviews of Heavy Metal (Collector's Edition)Movie Review: A mixed up batch of fun Summary: 5 StarsMost movies now and days contain so much that you actually lose interest. And while, yes, this movie seems to jump from point to point, it all contains one message. Chaos is prevelent no matter where you go, but there will ALWAYS be someone there to stand up and be our guardian. The animation in this movie is awesome. The storylines are great. It's a great movie. I grew up watching this movie with my own father. He introduced it to me and I fell in love with it immediately. How could I not? I am thankful to my father for showing me this movie. I hope that many generations can come to love it.
Movie Review: How to watch this movie Summary: 5 StarsEXCELLENT. Imaginative ALIENS, trippy SPACESHIPS, cool ROBOTS, exotic PLANETS. Described as animated soft-porn, but sexual content takes up no more time than kissing scenes do in Star Wars. Bold and creative artistry makes other worlds truly otherworldly. Rather than piecing together a lame and predictable plot in the tradition of Hollywood or Disney, various sub-movies show a simple good vs. evil battle depicted in different worlds at different times. This frees the animators to be at their best, and the results are entertaining and visually stunning. The lone scene that doesn't occur in the future or on other planets - a WWII bombing mission - seems oddly in place with the rest. EXCELLENT.
Movie Review: A look into a 13 year old's Immature Fantasy Summary: 1 StarsIf you are 13 years old and just hitting puberty this is probably the coolest DVD you've ever seen. Pointless nudity, pointless action, pointless gore, and heavy metal music. What more could you want.
Having seen real Anime that is good, it was tough to even compare this. The animation was horrible, and the dialog even worse. Stereotypes, clichés and all the plot of a B, no C grade movie.
If you have half a brain and like good animation I recommend movies like "Ghost in the Shell" or "Akira" (if you want something from the same era), but I must warn you; If you only want to see some mindless drivel conjured up from a 13 year olds wet dream, then don't waste your time on the two movies I just mentioned. You'll be bogged down in excellent animation and intelligent plot. The only movie comparable to this would be "Ninja Scroll" as far as action and type, but again it is 4.5 stars better than this.
In conclusion I'd have to say that this is the worst animated movie I've ever seen (though as I mentioned before, if I had just hit puberty this would have been a 5 star movie). If you are over 18, or if you have ever actually kissed a girl, then steer clear of this waste of time.
Movie Review: A classic of stunning ineptitude. Summary: 2 StarsWhat an innocent time it was...my first encounter with this notorious "adult animation film" was, not surprisingly, in its soundtrack form. I was just discovering loud rock music and thought myself oh-so-rebellious by picking up a cassette tape called "Heavy Metal". And one might remember that for years, this film was out of print and, apparently, the subject of much clamoring from fans who demanded its release. It was when their demands were finally met that I finally saw the film itself, and this past week, over 10 years later, I rented it again just to refresh my memory.
My initial reaction was identical to my reaction yesterday when I rewatched the film: Disappointment. This was supposed to be a breakthrough work in animation? Heavy Metal was a film whose look, artwork, storyline, and even sound mix were positively amateurish, even for 1981, and it's probably the single best example of how far behind American animation is, on a technical level, compared to Japanese anime. (Although a team of animators from around the globe worked on this thing, the above-the-line personnel and producers were from the U.S., and the film's comic-book sensibility is obviously American in tone) Heavy Metal may have flown its flag of sex and violence, but let's remember that Japanese anime had already been there, not to mention Ralph Bakshi and Robert Crumb.
Given its utter lack of content coherence, Heavy Metal's best sequences are the ones that don't attempt to make sense. I'll admit that final sequence "Taarna" is a personal favourite, despite stunningly inept action animation (how much does your sword weigh, Taarna -- 200 pounds?), crude backgrounds and characters, a snail-like pace, and one of the most annoying animal sidekicks in history. Taarna's steed looks like a flying chicken, stuffed and roasted! Still, I'll admit I remember the character fondly as an early sex icon. Otherwise, the best sequence is "B-17", Dan O'Bannon's plotless, bloody horror piece (probably helped by the fact that it's the shortest of all the segments), and "Harry Canyon", whose slow and ponderous plot is almost saved by the authentic New York voice stylings of Richard Romanus.
If you're in for some brainless, chauvinistic adult animation, I'd recommend going for the sequel, Heavy Metal 2000, instead. If you divorced the first Heavy Metal from excuses such as age and sentimentality, what you'll find is a boring, overlong, fragmented, visually flat piece that's more filler than substance, one which should have been 30 minutes long instead of 90.
Movie Review: Rockin' animated flick! Summary: 5 Stars
An astronaut brings home to her daughter a gift, it's a green jewel from a distant planet. But when it murders her father, it turns out that it's called "Loc-Narr" which is the sum of all evil and brings death & destruction including corruption to anyone who possesses it, the ball begins to tell five stories involving warriors, monsters, zombies, aliens, outer space, other worlds, and good vs. evil.
Inspired by the popular adult comic book that was originally from France, this is a stunning and very adult animated movie from the producers of "Ghostbusters" and " Animal House" that blends the genres of horror, science fiction and fantasy into one entertaining and fun animated movie. The artwork with animation in the sequences are just terrific and there's plenty of things in this movie to please the fan of animation, sci-fi and fantasy such as sex, nudity, animated hotties such as Taarna the white haired warrior chick, violence, drugs, the voices of Roger "Squidward" Bumpass, Eugene Levy, John Candy, Harold Ramis and an awesome soundtrack featuring Devo, Black Sabbath, Don Felder, Stevie Nicks, Elmer Bernstein, Journey and more.
This DVD Collector's Edition is just awesome! it contains both the theatrical version and the full length in progress version featuring voices and some scenes that didn't make the final cut. It contains two audio commentaries on both version by producer Carl Mareck, a documentary on the film went from vision to cult animated favorite, two deleted scenes like the never before seen "Neverland" sequence, Photo galleries, remastered picture and sound quality.
This is a must see movie and DVD for fans of Animation & Science Ficton and fantasy alike and have some naughty fun.
