Movie Reviews of Heartbreak Ridge (Snap Case)Movie Review: Heartbreak Ridge Summary: 5 Stars
Easily one of my favorite films of all time. From the intro's black and white scenes of the Korean conflict with Don Gibson's "Sea of a Heartbreak" playing, with a dubbed in banjo, in the background to the fade to color present with a battle scared Clint in the drunk tank telling war stories and backing it up with action to prove his point in front of a captive audience. This is a great action and scene packed film. Meant to be taken as tongue in cheek. I look at it as what it might be like if Clint Eastwood did standup comedy. I probably watch this movie 3 times a year. No it's not high art as other reviewers have stated; but who cares. It's a good story, an honest story with some peripheral basis in fact and a lot of patriotism. The story exploits ideals and emotions that most folks over 50 can probably identify with throughout the movie. My 11-year-old son loves the movie. " This is an AK47 assault rifle, the preferred weapon of your enemy and makes a distinct sound when fired at you." This is entertainment at its best.
Movie Review: One of Eastwood's Best! Summary: 5 Stars
"Heartbreak Ridge" is one of Clint Eastwood's best films and is one of my favorites. Eastwood is terrific as "Gunny Highway", an old-school, tough as nails, "it's my way or the highway" Marine drill Sargent who whips a group of goof-off misfits into a fighting Recon Platoon just in time for the Granada invasion. Mario Van Peeples is great as "Stitch Jones", a washed-up rock and roller who is the lead goof-off of the platoon. Eastwood never runs out of halarious one-liners as he takes on all comers from his goof-off recruits to the "I'm Playing Soldier" Col. who transfers from Supply and is trying to commanding the outfit. In the end, "Gunny" Highway and the Recon Platoon prevail and save the day during the Granada Operation, rescuing the Americans stranded at a medical University on the island. If you are an Eastwood fan, don't miss this one!
Movie Review: Be advised: I'm mean, nasty and tired . . . Summary: 5 Stars
Is this the greatest Clint Eastwood movie of all time? No. Is is classic? Yes. The hard-nosed Eastwood plays Gunny Sgt. Thomas Highway who has reached the end of his blood-and-guts career as a Marine and is looking around for a place to lie down and die when he's transfered to run a recon unit inhabited by a bunch of misfits and renegades and complete dipsh*ts. There are more classic Eastwood monologues than you can shake a copy of Dirty Harry at here. The invasion of Grenada plays into the movie around the end and Gunny Highway take his group of Lifetakers and Heartbreakers on the ride of their young lives. Into battle. Overall, there are some glitches here, but the movie flows and Eastwood is at the top of his form. Enjoyable and slightly sad. Definitely a movie you have to have for your DVD collection.
Movie Review: An awesome movie for true Clint Eastwood fans! Summary: 5 Stars
Let me start off with a plea. PUT THIS ON DVD! PLEASE! Eastwood fans will buy it!As another reviewer said, this is one of the funniest movies I have ever seen. It's classic Clint Eastwood type of humor: dry, sarcastic, straight-faced, etc. The language is pretty bad and does not add anything to this movie except for the fact that maybe dirty language is pretty common with those in the military in general and, therefore, the movie is a more realistic. Clint has so many one-liners that are hilarious that you can watch this movie many times, especially if you are a true Clint Eastwood fan. I know I've seen this probably 25-30 times, if not more. Except for the language, this is HIGHLY recommended for Eastwood fans!
Movie Review: Clint Eastwood as John Wayne Summary: 5 Stars
Clint Eastwood's current success with his new movie Mystic River, and the reissue of many of his older works in triple packs, caused me to return to some of his movies that I haven't watched in a long time. You should do the same. While watching this movie I suddenly realized that Eastwood was playing a 100% John Wayne role (I mean this as praise not scorn) and doing it very well. The overwhelming strength of his personality gives credible life to his role and unites the film, and is reminiscent of the final part of Unforgiven where he dominates an entire town by willpower alone. This is very much a feel-good movie, but it has plenty of subtle nuances and sub-themes as well. Recommended.
