Movie Review: A Great Ride With Clint....To..."Heartbreak Ridge"....
Summary: 5 Stars

This review refers to "Heartbreak Ridge"...Warner Home Video..DVD edition...

"Heartbreak Ridge" from 1986 is Eastwood's tough guy image personified. He is Gunnery Sgt. Tom "Gunny" Highway. Gunny has seen it all, and done it all. He's a decorated war hero who has survived battle in both Korea and Vietnam. He's tough and gruff and will soon face mandatory retirement. With no war to fight his last assignment is to whip the members of a raw but feisty recon platoon into shape. He's up against an unwilling group,a "follow orders or else"(not exactly his style)type commanding officer, and an ex-wife who's as feisty as the recruits. Both he and his men(and his ex-wife) are put to the test when war breaks out on the Island of Grenada. It was directed by Eastwood, Marsha Mason co-stars and the cast is nicely rounded out by Mario VanPeebles, Moses Gunn, Bo Svenson and the wonderful Eileen Heckart.

This 1986 film looks great on this DVD. Warner has done a nice job with the clarity and colors. The widescreen format lets us in on all the action and the Dolby Dig 5.1 surrounds wonderfully. Lennie Niehaus' fabulous score completes the package.Don't look for much in the way of special features. There are theatrical trailers, some cast film highlights, and subtitles in English, French, Spanish,Portugese and Japanese. It may be viewed in French as well.

If you're a big Eastwood fan, you may want to purchase this in the Clint Eastwood - Hero (Absolute Power / Heartbreak Ridge / A Perfect World) 3-pack instead. It also includes Absolute Power andA Perfect World You know you'll buy them all anyway and this way will save you some money...check it out!

Thanx...and enjoy.....Laurie

Movie Review: You're Marines now. You adapt. You overcome. You improvise.
Summary: 5 Stars

THE WAR: Grenada, not much of an obstacle in the grand scheme of things, but it's a perfect redemption opportunity for a hardened Vietnam vet whipping a group of slackers into Marines.

STORY: Through a glass-swallowing voice, Gunnery Sergeant Tom "Gunny" Highway (Eastwood) exudes the strength, experience, and military behaviorisms expected of a veteran of both the Korean and Vietnam war, not to mention the Medal of Honor pinned on his chest. When he confronts his new, less than military-like Recon platoon, he must enforce his will, turn the men into life takers and heart breakers, and prepare them for the combat.

PATRIOTISM: Gunny Highway is the epitome of patriotism. A man who has devoted his entire life to the service, who lives, breathes, eats, and sleeps the military life. When country supersedes life and family, then there can be no questioning patriotism and heroism.

FAVORITE BATTLE(S): When Highway eventually locks horns with his anal commanding officer, Major Powers, the two throw down in a mud puddle while surrounded by their cheering soldiers.

FAVORITE LINE: Be advised. I'm mean, nasty and tired. I eat concertina wire and pi*# napalm and I can put a round in a flea's a*# at 200 meters. So why don't you go hump somebody else's leg, mutt face, before I push yours in.

THE MESSAGE: The young men and women of today don't have the resolve and grit of previous generations; there is no denying this fact. When faced with the adversity of war, our Armed Forces will have to rely on the knowledge, skill, and sinewy strength of grizzled veterans who have "been there, done that." Thank goodness there are some Gunny Highways around to lead our brave young men and women.

This is one of the most underrated movies of all time, and a classic that doesn't get the respect it deserves. One of my favorites.

Movie Review: As real as it gets
Summary: 5 Stars

This movie garnered alot of controversy in 1986 when it was released in the movies. Alot of Marines felt it was far-fetched, and not the way Marines act. If this were true then they shouldn't show any movies about the Marine Corps, and that in order to know, and apprecieate what the Marines are all about enlist, and go through boot camp. I know that the movie was all too real to me. I feel that it grasped what a Marine is supposed to be all about: You improvise, adapt, overcome. In another movie called "Tribes" which is about a hippie's take on the Marine Corps shows a sign in the barracks saying: "Can't Means Won't." The Marines aren't looking for recruits just commmitments which is a billboard I see as I drive along. That's a real Commitment to Excellence, and this is probably what Eastwood was thinking when directing this movie that perhaps the military was getting too soft, and losing the plot about what it was all about, and that was defending the country. Veitnam did soften the military a bit as with the introduction of Selective service instead of a draft notice, and the introduction, or should we say the reintroduction of the G.I. bill to where you can finish your education in the military which is a good thing, but remember the commitment you made when you signed on the first and utmost thing is the defense of your country. This is a rather good movie, and it was done up reverently as far as I'm concerned. I wouldn't know as I know I'm too chicken to sign up for military duty, and I don't think I would last. I'm too old now anyway. The cut off is 35. I would recommend this to anyone who was thinking of joining the Marines.

Movie Review: Clint Deserved a Promotion
Summary: 5 Stars

Clint Eastwood's "Heartbreak Ridge" is an outstanding movie that was actually ahead of its time in giving us insight into how much one has to sacrifice when completing a career in the military. The movie is set in 1983, and Eastwood plays a grizzled gunnery sergeant in the USMC. He's been in just about every conflict since the battle on the frozen hill of Korea, from which the title is taken. It's a pretty typical military movie, with veteran Clint taking a bunch of low performing gyrines and whipping them into a top-notch unit. The characters are well cast, espeically the commanding officer, who gets his just desserts in a one-on-one faceoff with Eastwood. The subplot, detailing Eastwood's failed marriage to gorgeous Marsha Mason is perfectly handled as well. You can't help rooting for Clint and her to get back together, but the relationship is handled in very adult manner, leaving that question unanswered untilthe final sequence. The climax, set against the backdrop of the Granada invasion, reminds us all of the high risks our soldiers take to every day keep us all free. It also marks the transitionary phase toward increased professionalism our military was going through during the years of neglect after the fall of Saigon. As a vet who served during that time, I felt especially vindicated when I first saw this movie back when it was released in the theaters. Although I suspect it never got its due from the critics, it's a classic and can be enjoyed over and over. Great job, Clint.

Movie Review: highly likeable, highly quotable, Eastwood masterpiece
Summary: 5 Stars

How does a person really determine their favorite movies? Is it the ability to watch them time and time again? Is it the amount of quotable lines? Is it the transition from one scene you love to the next scene you love to the next to the next, etc. I'm not 100% sure WHY, but this is one of my favorite movies of all time. I've put a lot of thought into it, and I still can't figure it out. Eastwood is there, in his growling, raspy prime, and it has a stroing, albiet odd supporting cast of characters (some who border on caricatures) and a bevy of awesome, repeatable lines. Lets face it...for every person who loved Eastwood in Gran Torino, the character was developed in Gunny Highway. Eastwood is getting up there in years, and I can't think of a single actor I will miss as much when he finally stops acting and directing. He's on top of his game here, and even when the movie dips into farce, it still tugs at your heart in a way that a war/drama/comedy shouldn't. This movie asks a lot of questions...where does a man derive his value? Can an old Marine fit into the modern Corps? Can you reconcile a relationship with time and effort? Ultimately, can people (him, his Recon Unit) change? You may rent Heartbreak Ridge and find none of this, but I do every time I watch it. Rent it if you must, but at least have your money set aside to buy it when you fall in love with the movie.
