Movie Reviews of Harold and MaudeMovie Review: Wonderful! A diamond in the rough. Summary: 5 Stars
This movie was made quite a few years before I was born and I would never have known about it if not for AMC's constant rotation. I admit that the macabre humor perplexed me at first, but the superb cast pulls it off wonderfully. Vivian Pickles, who plays Harold's blissfully clueless mom, is so funny that she could've stolen the movie from the two title characters if she had appeared in more scenes. One of the movie's funniest moments is when she signs Harold up for a dating service and then tells him, "They screen out the fat and the ugly, so obviously this is a firm of high standards." All the other great things about 'Harold & Maude' have already been said by the other reviewers. I'm glad that this film is so beloved by so many people. It's a great legacy for Colin Higgins, who wrote such a beautiful book in 1970. Sadly, he passed away in 1988.
Movie Review: One of the very best! Summary: 5 Stars
This was one of those movies that was playing in the video store that my first thought was "What the heck is THIS weirdness?" Then I stood there for the rest of the movie laughing my butt off. I skipped renting it and just bought it. (I did the same thing with "Princess Bride"). It's a great commentary on life in general and it's larger than life 'bad guys' are, unfortunately, not too far off the mark. The great messages are:
1) Love is Love, no matter between who, and it's beautiful.
2) You should observe and even enjoy the absurdities and horrors of the world because you can't really do a lot about them.
3) Don't live your life to please others.
4) Don't be different just like everybody else, just be yourself.
For the person that questions authority and conventions, this is the perfect movie.
Movie Review: Harold and Maude Summary: 5 Stars
This movie is the bomb.We first meet a depressed, but spoiled teen who finds going to funerals a pleasure as a hobby. Then out of the blue at another funeral he meets bubbly and full of life woman,Maude.Maude has had her share of tough times and lives life to the fullest rather doing weird things such as saving trees or stealing cars.As she and Harold hang out more and her teaching Harold the meaning of fun and life, he comes out and is actually happy. The ending is sad, and although I am not a dramatic person, I actually cried at the end for about 2 minutes. And even though she is 79 and he is 20, it never seems that way.Harold,in the end, understands the meaning of life and you get the feeling he promises to live life to the fullest.Overall great movie and quite funny I must say.Cat Stevens gives a great music score too. FIVE STARS!!!!!
Movie Review: If you've got two synapses to rub together, you want to watch this film Summary: 5 Stars
The screenplay (get it online) includes essential scenes which were unforgivably expunged from the film, which will salve the ire of the more critical viewer who will construe much of Maude's irresponsible, selfish, childish conduct as an affront to her age and situation, eg. if you've ever had anything stolen from you, you know that Maude's stealing people's cars is the epitome of anti-life for the ordinary citizen. However, the existential element required to make sense of this behaviour is provided by the Sisyphean character, Glaucus (only fleetingly seen in the film), who every day starts carving an ice statue of Venus, which melts when he falls asleep, and every day he starts anew with the same unbounded joy. In my view, Glaucus is the binding agent for the story. Watch the film, read the screenplay, and prepare to be dazzled.
Movie Review: Excellent Film! Summary: 5 Stars
"Harold and Maude" is one of the BEST films ever made. Bud Cort and Ruth Gordon give such brillant and believable performances. As you watch the film you entirely forget the age difference and find yourself believing that yes, "Harold loves Maude". The music of Cat Stevens adds an undercurrent that not only is this Romeo and Juliet of the early 1970's but also an extension of the counterculture movement of the 1960's. Maude, though old enough to be Harold's Grandmother, is a free spirit that decries the materialism and rigid social conventions of the day and personifies the counterculture movement. I only wish that a sequel could have been made; something like "Life After Maude" where we would find Harold making a profound and beneficial change in American culture.
