Movie Reviews of Harold and MaudeMovie Review: Maude is steering... ut oh Summary: 5 Stars
Harold is a young rich kid who finds that the only thing in life that brings him joy is death - namely faking his and attending funerals for those who have recently experienced their own (never mind that he doesn't know the recently departed). Maude is a much much older lady who finds that the only thing in life that brings her joy is everything, especially the things she shouldn't do - like attending funerals of strangers and then stealing cars of mourners to get herself home. The two of course meet up and an unlikely wild ride ensues.
If I'm not mistaken this was filmed in '71 and released in '72? I was born around then so I missed this one until now when it came up in a "If you like these movies, you may like this one" search. It was so good that I realized I may need to start catching up on some others I missed that were "before my time". If you like quirky, character driven stories, this is a good one to go with so long as some darker themes don't offend you.
Movie Review: Truely a classic, at any time Summary: 5 Stars
I had put off watching this movie for SO long because I was disturbed by the idea of such an old person forming a loving relationship with such a young person. Wow, that prejudice blinded me against such a great movie. I finally watched it and was amazed. I laughed, cried, and really enjoyed the characters and emotions coming through the screen. Harold has a cool dark humor and although suicide isnt funny this movie really pulls out laughs. Maude is so sweet and you can really get into the personalities of these people.
I wouldn't say this is a cult classic, because to me that means it only speaks to a certain group of people at a certain time period. The themes and ideas are relatable by all people at any time, even decades later. I think this is a wonderful movie well worth anyone's time. It certainly warmed my heart, and I like to think made me more open to not judging a movie by the cover.
Plus the soundtrack is totally awesome!!!
Movie Review: one more person willing to love this film Summary: 5 Stars
Ok, so like 272 people have had wonderful things to say about this film and what more could I possibly add to the discussion? This movie has over the years fed my soul and "reason to be". It is a beautiful reminder that after all the education and family and work stuff there are still other reasons to remain here. To choose to live. As imperfect as it all is. As sad as our mortality can make us. Life has an aspect to it that is so rich, so lovely, so enchanting, so alluring, that, provided we are capable to slowing down long enough to take a good look at it, can be loved and embraced and followed, like a moth following a candle. Finding yourself wasn't just a sixties slogan, it had to do with letting go of those things we think are important, so that we might truly begin to embrace those things that are essential to happines and to life. Harold and Maude is about all that and more. And as Forest Gump once said, "That's all I have to say about that."
Movie Review: What is life? Summary: 5 Stars
This is one of those movies that I would offer as required viewing for anyone on the verge of, or just entering, adulthood. See it with a friend or two when you can sit down afterwards and talk about what you think Harold and Maude have to say about living. Sure, this is a pretty bizarre movie. And, truth to tell, I give it the highest rating because it's a sentimental favorite; it reminds me of the person who first told me about it. Would I have liked it anyway? Well, it's got a fair share of memorable lines. There are a number of laugh-out-loud moments. I like fantasy and surrealism. And now there's even the, "Oh, yeah, that's the way it was" element because it takes place during the Vietnam War era. So even without the nostalgia I would have liked it anyway. But I also give it such a high rating because I do feel strongly that Harold and Maude deserves to be viewed and discussed by friends who are grappling with the Big Questions.
Movie Review: Independent Cinema's Forebear Summary: 5 Stars
What can be said about Harold and Maude? Beautiful love story of two cosmic souls brought together by death. Hilarious black comedy with a heart of gold. I could think of more cliches but I digress.
Harold is a lonely lost young man, he stages suicides for his mother's benefit in a fruitless attempt for her attention. Upon attending a funeral he meets Maude, an elderly jovial woman so full of life she radiates happiness. Their friendship blossoms and Harold leans how to live instead of just existing. It is amazing how just one person could free him from his mental prison and realize that life is worth living.
Maude is really the muse of this film. Her philosophy is so clear and truthful that all the (explitive deleted) of the world just melts away and she is truly free. It is still is a very fun movie not heavy handed, just a pure delight.
