Movie Reviews of Harold and MaudeMovie Review: I Love Everything About This Movie Summary: 5 Stars
Yes, I admit it. This movie is my all-time favorite. And the first time I saw it, it wasn't. On that occasion the auditorium was filled with students who'd seen it before and laughed *before* the funny parts. I was peeved and also somewhat horrified about the idea of such an age-discrepant couple. Fast forward some years, and I saw it again. In silence. Wow!!! The music (nearly all of it by Cat Stevens - available in pieces on Tea for the Tillerman and Footsteps in the Dark: Greatest Hits, Vol. 2) is excellent. The casting is perfect. The acting is super. The dialogue is amazing. The timing is spot-on. The settings (Harold's mother's mansion, Maude's house, the church, the therapist's office, the graveyard, etc.) are perfect. And the message of hope springs eternal. (... although if you are religious and take the ending literally, you may be offended ...) This movie never gets old for me. I highly recommend it.
Movie Review: fantastic Summary: 5 Stars
I had heard about this movie through friends but was never impressed by the story. A reclusive anti social kid who befriends and falls in love with an elderly (though young at heart) eccentric. I wrote it off completely til I saw a bit of it on television and thought it was hilarious and as it turns out I rented the movie and was extremely hooked. Harold is a rich kid with a high strung, selfish mother who tries anything to find a suitor for him, in turn Harold escapes from his home to overshadow funeral processions and memorials. At a number of these events, Maude is in attendence and she lights up the scene with her off the wall, and positively upbeat personality that horrifies and amuses Harold. After a while they become unlikely friends. Maude helps Harold live a little and in turn he develops true affection to Maude. With Ruth Gordon's charm and incredible acting abilites, and Cat Steven's classy soundtrack, its not hard to find yourself feeling happy and free after the movie is over. It really teaches you a message about being your own person and enjoying life.
Movie Review: One of THE BEST films to help you face living Summary: 5 Stars
Prior to VHS or DVD - back in 1971-75 - when movie theaters (remember those, the ones where it was only $1 for two films and a short and the films were shown in BIG theaters - so what if the sound wasn't Dolby or DTS - films were still films not; just 1 of 10 stock plots enhanced by computer special effects.
Well, this film was so absolutely brilliant and profound, innocent and ageless that I saw it every time it was advertised "in the newspaper" - in the movie section. I believe I lost count at around 75 - now with the DVD in my closet it just is not watched as mcuh but remains for times when it is necessary to remember that people are really alive and giving souls - whether they represent the protagonist or antagonist.
"Give me an "L"; give me an "I"; give me a "V"; give me an "E"; L I V E, live! Else you've got nothin' to talk about in the locker room."
A hint to the seeing of this work of art -"allow no preconceptions of what it will be or what it is, just let it be - observe without judgement and you will KNOW!
Movie Review: If you want to sing out, sing out Summary: 5 Stars
Everything I ever needed to know about life I learned from Harold and Maude. Mostly Maude, but why quibble.1. As alike as people are, we have discernable differences. These should be celebrated, expounded upon, enjoyed - not forced into ill-fitting boxes, for they make us what we are. Ignoring them is tantamount to erasing a person. 2. You're alive for as long as you feel alive; you're dead as soon as you stop feeling. Maude knew this. She also knew that going out at the top of your game is far better than being ushered off the field, limping. Harold never realized he wasn't really alive until he had in his view someone whose life was in stark contrast to his own. 3. Loving one person means embracing love in general. Go out and love some more! That's what Maude told Harold, though he refused to listen, initially. We cannot be decimated by love, only hurt temporarily. The real damage comes from not loving at all. 4. Some movies should be bought, viewed, viewed again and cherished. Harold and Maude is one such movie.
Movie Review: Maude is my hero Summary: 5 Stars
"Harold and Maude" is not really a love story in the conventional romantic sense. It's more of a story about how one person can change another person's life just by being themself. Harold is a wealthy, bored, morose young man who gets his kicks by attending funerals of people he doesn't know and staging elaborate, fake suicides to rattle his mother. At one funeral he happens to meet Maude, another "funeral crasher". Maude, about to turn 80, is starting to wonder if her own death shouldn't be coming soon. The two quickly embark on a friendship (and, yes, even sexual relationship) which completely changes Harold's views on life. Maude is one of the greatest characters I've ever seen portrayed on film. At the same time daring and sensitive, childlike and wise, rebellious and spiritual, Maude is an elderly iconoclast whose fierce love of life has inspired her to free herself of almost all of society's restrictions. Frankly, she's my hero. At times touching, funny, inspiring and strange, "Harold and Maude" is one of my favorite films of all time.
