Movie Reviews of Harold and MaudeMovie Review: Absolutely One of the Best Summary: 5 Stars
Here is a film that I just cannot get enough of, and, I fear, is grossly misunderstood by far too many people. A love story like no other, an inspired lesson in self-awareness and fearlessness in self-expression - this may fall into the "cult" department, but should be seen by all. Unfortunately, the extreme May-December romance of Harold and Maude raises eyebrows to the point that many see only this aspect of the film - "Oh my God he slept with an 80-year-old woman oh my God" - but in actuality, this has so little to do with the film's message. It points out that love comes in all shapes and sizes, and most often when we least expect it. Also, that a friend of any age can open us to seeing the world in a new, more truthful light. Harold begins as an introverted, unhappy young man, whose only creative outlet consists of tormenting his image-obsessed, utter snob of a mother (thus forming the most hilarious visuals for the viewer). After meeting with Maude, his world rapidly opens to new discoveries, and a greater understanding of his fellow human beings. If you have any kind of heart, the final sexual union (relax, folks - we don't see the details) between Harold and Maude doesn't offend - rather, it warms the heart and soul. The DVD offers a few treats - theatrical trailers, and, well, a great print. I feel that this is a definite must-own... it is truly an amazing film.
Movie Review: ONE OF THE BEST MOVIES OF THE 20TH CENTURY Summary: 5 Stars
I was fortunate to see this film when it first came out, when I was close to the age of young Harold of the film. There are not many films I can say really had a positive, deep and meaningful effect on me the way this film did. WOW...! Ruth Gordon is absolutely DELIGHTFUL and magical as Maude, Bud Cort "just right" for the part of Harold. Oh, we should all have a "Maude" in our lives! Now it is 30 years since I saw the film for the first time, and I now feel the same as I did then: I want to be like Maude in my old age -- creative, alive and enjoying life profoundly. The sexual implication in the film (that 17 yr old boy made love with, and fell in love with, an 80 year old woman) would only bother the most repressive of minds. It is pure poetry. What DID bother me was the ending, which I will give away now only because I feel it is the only real flaw of the film. Maude, at such a height of enjoyment of her life, chose to commit suicide. Yet even this disappointing ending cannot blow out the beautiful light of this film. The musical score with songs written and sung by Cat Stevens are just superb! This movie is funny, stimulating, wild, profound and serious all at once. This is one of the few films I would ever pay full dollar for: It's a classic, and it's that good!
Movie Review: They're just backing away from life Summary: 5 Stars
I find an interesting dichotomy in those who love and those who dislike this film--the former tend to listen to the lessons and feel the love behind them, while the latter tend not to like to be "told what to do," as if the lessons in this film are heavy-handed orders that must be obeyed to lead a happy life. The truth is that Harold and Maude are extreme versions of very realistic characters--Harold, the fatherless young man with a domineering mother who never has learned to live life on his own terms, and Maude, the concentration-camp survivor who has learned that life is what you make of it, and we shouldn't let our conditions or circumstances determine who we are or how we look at life. Together, they're just what each other needs, and they help each other to learn what they need to learn. If you want to enjoy this film--and it is a marvelous film--you have to let go of expectations and let the characters be exactly who they are, and not get disappointed when they aren't what we'd like them to be or when they don't do what we expect them to do. That's the true beauty of this film--it demands that we let go, just as Maude's character has learned to let go of expectations that everything follow the "norms" of our society.
Movie Review: Grabbing Life By the... Summary: 5 Stars
Harold is a strange young man. He is obssessed with death and dark things, reacting to his mother's attempts to socialize him and get him dates through a bizarre series of faked suicide attempts. He goes to funerals for fun, and he seems the original goth, dressing in black at all times and driving a hearse.
Maude is in her early 80s, a concentration camp survivor, and a woman who embraces each day as though it were her last. She has a positive philosophy about life, and one that thumbs its nose at the establishment, unoriginal thinking, and permanence.
The two are a very unlikely pair, but Harold and Maude somehow find one another and share a very real and pure romance that brings the 19 year old out of his dark shell and shows him how to live.
The soundtrack is all Cat Stevens and awesome. The scenes involving Harold and his mother are hilarious. The the looks they exchange are enough to get a person rolling on the floor. The chemistry between this young man and older woman challenges any in Hollywood before or since.
This movie is a must see for anyone that likes a more cerebral dark comedy, and Maude's life lessons can be a benefit to anyone that bothers to look deeply enough into them.
Movie Review: 80 Looks pretty young when you're 79 Summary: 5 Stars
When I grow up, I want to be just like Maude.
This movie dispelled my fear of growing old, and turned me on to Cat Steven's super great music and lyrics.
This is a black comedy , a cult classic. I used to gauge my future romances by whether my date liked (and got) what this film was all about.
This is my favorite movie of all time. At first I liked it, but each time I saw it , I enjoyed it more , until I fell in love with it.
It is offbeat and quirky, with snatches of dry humor and profound truth.... so if you are looking for a comfortable neat and tidy movie, look elsewhere, as this will irritate you and you won't know why.
For , as Jack Kerouac said so eloquently:
"The only people for me are the mad ones, the ones who are mad to live, mad to talk, mad to be saved, desirous of everything at the same time, the ones who never yawn or say a commonplace thing, but burn, burn, burn, like fabulous yellow roman candles exploding like spiders across the stars and in the middle you see the blue centerlight pop and everybody goes "Awww!"
Yeah, you know who you are, and you know you will watch this one..
