Movie Reviews of Hannah and Her SistersMovie Review: Great Woody Summary: 5 Stars
This is Woody Allen's multi-layered, multi-dimmensional masterpiece. Each sister in the movie has her own story to tell, as well as Allen himself, who is an anxiety-ridden schnook afraid he's going to die without learning the secret of life (to be happy). The picture has so much going on with regard to storyline and character that a synopsis would not do it justice. It's rare that Allen ever tackles so much in one movie, and it all works marvelously. Although all the actors/actresses are terrific here, Michael Caine is especially noteworthy as Hannah's husband who's having an affair with sister Lee (Barbara Hershey). This is a major movie achievement.
Movie Review: "God, she's beautiful..." Summary: 5 Stars
Hannah and Her Sisters is my absolute favorite film of all time. It is a brilliant character study. It has a biting sense of humour, but it allows the viewer to feel for the characters. It is beautifully photographed. This film has an almost improvised feel that, when watching, makes you feel like you are amongst old friends and relatives. The transfers are great and the sound is very crisp. I was a little let down in the features department. As usual, this film gets the Woody Allen bare-bones treatment. The quality of the film more than makes up for that, though.
Movie Review: Hannah and Her Sisters Summary: 5 Stars
One of Woody's most intricately plotted films, "Hannah" is also one of his most tenderly observed, right up there with "Annie Hall" and "Manhattan." Plumbing the romantic entanglements and unspoken desires of its three titular characters, Allen draws out the inner worlds of his all-too-human subjects in rich detail. With an impeccable cast--Wiest and Caine both won Oscars for their supporting roles--and a wise, arch script by the Woodman himself, "Hannah" examines the chronic dissatisfaction that permeates our complex and conflicted lives.
Movie Review: Great film with Wonderful performances Summary: 5 Stars
Hannah is one of Woody Allen's best films. I am a big fan so it's hard to pick my favorite. This one is right up there. What really makes this film stand out to me are the performances by Michael Caine and Dianne Wiest. I understand they both won Oscars for these performances. Watch them closely and you will see why. Woody's attempt to find God in the Catholic Church is classic. The movie is funny and scores hits on many levels. But that's what a good Woody Allen movie is all about.
Movie Review: AMONG WOODY ALLEN'S BEST Summary: 5 Stars
"Hannah and Her Sisters" can be counted among the five best Woody Allen movies. I use movies to teach philosophy, philosophy of religion, and ethics. Eugene O'Neill's film adaptation of "The Emperor Jones", Spike Lee's "Do the Right Thing", Stanley Kubrick's "Space Odyssee 2001", and that other great Allen film, "The Purple Rose of Cairo" are fixtures in my courses, "Hannah and Her Sisters" is a recent addition.
