Movie Reviews of Hannah and Her Sisters

Movie Review: "woody allen's film hits the jackpot!"
Summary: 5 Stars

In one of woody' best film, he is able to captivate the lives of 3 totally different sisters (and a hypocondriac husband) into an oscar winning film! The first sister is of course Hannah, the kind nurturing mother/ wife, who has remained good friends with her ex (allen) and her new husband (Michael Caine in an oscar winning role) who finds her hard to live with, because she gives so much and expects so little in return. The other sister is Lee (Barbra Hershey who is great) the beautiful, but emotionally sad sister, who wants to escape from her college professor boyfriend, and eventually falls in love with Hannah's husband.
The last sister is Holly (Dianne Wiest in an oscar winning role) the eccentric original person, who strives to find herself, while accidentally bringing down her sister hannah, and her rival April (Carrie Fisher). But by the end of the fillm they have all found happiness. Hannah has become more close to her husband. Lee has shrugged off her affair with Hannah's husband (who has fallen back in love with Hannah), and found new love. woody Allen (who has converted to Catholicism, but then tries several other religions) becomes lesser of a hypocondriac, and Holly & woody allen have married. And Allen (unable to have a child with hannah has a child with Holly)! crackerjack cameos by Maurren O' sullivan, and Daniel Stern! A great film all around! A+!

Movie Review: Nearly perfect in many ways
Summary: 5 Stars

There is a scene near the end of this film where Hannah (Mia Farrow) and her sisters Holly (Dianne Wiest) n"Lee(Barbara Hershey) meet over lunch and the camera slowly circles them as they engage in a heated emotionally charged conversation that is one of the most poignant moments I have ever seen on a screen. All 3 of these actresses are just outstanding in this movie. Mia Farrow has some scenes where her emotions are so vivdly expressed in her words and her facial expression that it is in my opinion one of the finest performances ever.
The secondary story line features Woody Allen as Hannah's ex-husband who is completely neurotic and obsessed with iiness and death. However Allen is able to twist this to great comic effect. The story weaves back and forth between the emotional upheaval in the lives of Hannah, her husband(Michael Caine) and her sisters to Allen and his character's search for spiritual fullfillment. All of the characters are fully realized people , none perfect, and yet basically well meaning. (with the possible exception of Caine's character).
I believe this is one of Woody Allen's finest films and have viewed it repeatedly over the years. The only weakness is the ending which is a bit contrived but that is easily forgivable in a film that is entertaining, thought provoking and funny at the same time.

Movie Review: "I luuurve it, I loave it, I luff it",
Summary: 5 Stars

This story of three sisters, their lives, loves, and struggles is delight from the beginning to the end. Along with three unforgettable women, Hannah (Mia Farrow, the eldest sister, a devoted wife and mother, a loyal sister to sensual Lee (Barbara Hershey) and artistic, neurotic and clueless Holley (Diane Wiest, a perfect match to Allen's characters), we meet their actors parents. Maureen O'Sullivan, "Tarzan's Jane", Mia Farrow's real life mother plays the flirting and drinking mother of three sisters. There are also three men in the sisters' lives: Elliot (Michael Caine), Hannah's husband who understands how great Hannah is but he is lusting after Lee, who is with a much older, wiser, talented but misanthropic and isolated artist Frederick. Here is also Mickey (Woody Allen) Mickey, the former husband of Hannah, a hypochondriac TV producer who lives in constant fear of death and tries to find meaning of life. All stories interweave effortlessly and seamlessly showing Allen's unique writing gift. As almost always in Allen's films, there are two important characters, his favorite place on Earth, Manhattan, NY and the music he adores. And as always, they add to the many many delights of this wonderful, sparkling, clever, ironic, sweet, funny and dramatic miracle.

Excellent!

Movie Review: Excellent
Summary: 5 Stars

If you've viewed any of MGM's other DVD editions of Allen films, you'll know what to expect from this one. The A/V quality is excellent: the beautiful 35mm visuals are well served by a fine transfer from a clear, sharp print. Scene selections are comprised of titled thumbnail images. The dubbed French dialogue track is just fine. The Spanish track is equally well-voiced, but muddy, a bit too loud and ultimately artificial. The English, Spanish and French subtitles are all as good as can be expected. The theatrical trailer is also included.

For those who have seen this film, I don't need to sing its praises. For those who haven't, there are few other films in Allen's oeuvre as terrific as this one. Like its thematic successor, "Husbands and Wives," this deft character study is perfectly performed by a famously accomplished cast, and brilliantly shot with a keen, nuanced attention afforded to the film's surroundings, characters and milieu in every scene. Some of Allen's films are trite routines, some are inspired entertainment and a handful are genuine artistic achievements - this is among the latter.

Movie Review: Woody's Best
Summary: 5 Stars

Woody reaches his greatest heights with this movie. Of all his other great movies (of which there are many), I think only Manhanttan can rival this one in terms of story and character development. Since I got my DVD player (two years ago), I've been patiently waiting for this one to become available. I can't urge you strongly enough to purchase this movie. Not only a great intertwined plot, but Woody giving one of his funniest performances. If you're a Woody Allen fan, then I'm sure you've seen this one already. And for the uninitiated, this is a great introduction to the later Woody movies. Woody has sometimes gotten other actors to play his character in his movies (see Kenneth Brannagh in Celebrity doing his best impersonation of Woody or John Cusack in Bullets over Broadway)and while they do a good job, the original is just better. This one has it all, Woody, award winning performances from Diane Weist and Michael Caine, a brilliant supporting cast and a great screenplay. Run, don't walk to purchase this one. It's a guaranteed winner.
