Movie Reviews of Hamlet

Movie Review: Mel has captured Hamlet's soul
Summary: 5 Stars

What a masterpiece. As much as I love Braveheart, I truly think this is Mel Gibson's finest work. It throws all over attempts into shadow, including the great Lawrence Olivier and certainly Kenneth Branaugh or Ethan Hawke. So often the female characters are reduced to cardboard mock-ups of feminine ideals of the Shakespearean age. Not here! Ofelia and Gertrude have souls and minds to probe, filled with as many dark secrets as Hamlet himself. I could never say enough about the caliber of this film. Suffice it to say that it is THE Hamlet of the ages and worth a look as well as a few dollars to own it.

Movie Review: Hamlet
Summary: 5 Stars

Hamlet returns to Denmark when his father, the King, dies. His mother Gertrude has already married Hamlet's uncle Claudius, the new King. They urge Hamlet to marry his beloved Ophelia. But soon the ghost of Hamlet's father appears and tells Hamlet that he was murdered by Claudius and Gertrude. Hamlet must choose between passive acquiescence and the need for a vengeance which might lead to tragedy. Zeferelli is a master filmmaker, and I highly suggest this movie to anyone who has ever marveled at the human spirit portrayed through film, and literature as well.

Movie Review: Franco Zeffirelli's Superior Hamlet
Summary: 5 Stars

Franco Zeffirelli's Hamlet is the definitive film adaptation of the most famous play ever written. This is a brilliant film by a genius filmmaker.

This film is a very naturalistic version set during the correct time period, the 13th century (the period Shakespeare set his play in). All of the actors give flawless performances. Mel Gibson and Glenn Close both give the best performances of their careers. The film was shot entirely on location in real Scottish castles, has amazing photography by David Watkin and boasts a great score by Ennio Morricone.

Movie Review: It's better than Branagh!
Summary: 5 Stars

I thought they'd never release this version of "Hamlet"on DVD, but it's finally here, so we can rejoice! This is my favorite film version of "Hamlet." I even prefer it to the Kenneth Branagh version, believe it or not! I think that Franco Zeffirelli's film does the best job of exploring the sexual undertones of the relationship between Hamlet and his mother. Mel Gibson gives a very emotional performance in the title role and Glenn Close and Helena bonham Carter give outstanding supporting performances.

Movie Review: Best Hamlet EVER
Summary: 5 Stars

The film is set in the time Hamlet was to have taken place rather than Shakespeare's time or some other. This DVD is widescreen with superb sound. It may not boll me over like seeing it in the theater- I sat through it twice- but it will do quite well.Gibson for my money has turned in the best film Hamlet I have ever seen, and I have seen about 14. Also the ENTIRE cast is top notch all the way. Five stars or maybe six? Gibson is as briliant as Olivie was in Othelo- the spares one.
