Movie Reviews of HIP HOP ABS Package - Fat Burning Cardio, Ab Sculpt, Total Body Burn, Secrets to Flat AbsMovie Review: Coudn't handle the annoyance factor Summary: 3 StarsWe bought this system and did two two of the videos. They weren't overly difficult and they would probably do some good. The pacing wasn't bad. The exercises weren't bad. You could probably get results from this course.
What was bad was the guy leading the videos: "Shawn P" or something like that. His voice reminded me of the Jamie Foxx character "Wanda" from the In Living Color series, except Wanda was funny. His voice annoyed my wife so much that she tried just turning down the volume, but then we felt like we paid a lot for videos with no sound. So we sent the stuff back, taking a loss on the ridiculously high shipping.
Overall, it's an okay set. There is some comic value: the white guy in the back trying too hard to be down was pretty funny. The exercises are doable, but the guys voice wasn't.
Movie Review: Great jokes/camaraderie Aerobics/Toning/Dance workout for BEGINNERS Summary: 4 StarsSean T. is very friendly, personable, confident, jokes around, is truly into dancing & wants to share it. He can be compared to Will Smith's personality. He's relaxed & actually talented & fluid when he dances. He really does everything slowly at first before going to temp & breaks most of the moves down, though not all. The workout portion he does all at once, no stopping/starting like most high end fitness videos & he talks with the dancers. He uses the same backup dancers for all the workouts & other portions. When he remarks on a song, you know he hears what you hear so they are on beat. He allows breaks in between the standing moves with step touches or bouncing to the beat, or on the floor work he allows you not to move for a few seconds saying how tired he is (this is too easy for him to be winded.) Each section you can decide if you want the music much louder drowning out Shawn's or hear his voice w/music like most workouts. The production quality in everything is great, lighting, camera angles, editing, sound quality, etc. except the music which I listed below.
DISK ONE
Secret to Flat Abs - 14 min
Sean w/2 girls on the set, this part being the tutorial on hot to do the poses & tighten, tilt, breathe for the workout. He also teaches how to do plank & boat yoga poses that he gives a different name to also tone the abs. Good, detailed instruction, anyone will have no problem following along.
Fat Burning Cardio - 30 min
Shawn T with several female & 2 male dancers in large loft/brick building. Pretty good music & you can't go wrong with Top 10 songs like Pussycat Dolls even if it's not them singing but sounds like them but bit more synthesized/clubby remixed. Short warm up of wide horse stance, so arm movements breathing, nice hunching/curling of the spine to loosen it, some quick hamstring stretches/lunges. Main portion is very simple dance moves, only a little more complex then step touches, a lot of standing crunches/bouncing to the beat. Only one move has you kicking out a little & couple knee lifts. The moves were good, the easier moves you'd see on dance floor or dance video, so no complaints there. Cool down is very quick, only a minute or so. The next day my abs only felt a tiny bit sore, which is not too bad, I'm not new to exercising.
DISK TWO
Ab Scuplt - 23 min
Shawn T with several female & 2 male dancers in large loft/brick building. Most of the girls have weighted gloves on & one guy has weights in his hand. The music is looped & more synthesized, not as bad as most fitness dvds, but not as good at the cardio, it's ok, though thankfully Shawn keeps you going. The dance floor is 17 min w/a lot more knee lifts, some dance styled punching to the side for obliques, standing crunches, etc. Floor work (4 min) sitting on the floor, easy balancing on [...] & feet & moving torso side to side, then same position & lifting one knee to chest & twisting to that side. Cool Down (2 min) sitting fwd bend, knee to chest, yoga sphinx & cobra stretch & ends with usual stretch arms & breath. I liked the knee lifts, etc. but wasn't as much dancing as I'd like, more aerobics then dancing. The floor work was very easy, but I just did the yoga boat pose with torso twists instead which was a harder workout. I felt my abs burn doing that.
Total Body Burn - 41 min
The songs were first his signature music, but looped a bit which annoyed me, then another looped basic dance beat like most fitness dvds, then "Lumidee - Never Leave You" song for dance portion, then a slower beat looped dance beat.
First was a warm-up with basic aerobics & more aerobics until the 15 min mark. Then using weights for 5 min, then the only moves you can call dance moves w/Lumidee song for 5 min, then weights for 5 min. The floor work at the 30 min mark has on knees slow push ups, reg ones, hand/knee single leg lifts & sitting on [...]/heels you turn your torso & also raise your leg. The last 2 min of the cool down is exactly like the Total Body Burn's.
Learn To Dance "Take it to the dance Floor" - 19 minClub looking place w/lights & a dance floor (like the commercial), Shawn w/3 female & 1 male dancer showing a pretty stylish dance routine they teach you. He shows you the routine normal speed, then teaches the lower body 2x 1/3 speed, adds the upper body 2x 1/3 speed, then both at 1/3 speed, then normal speed 2x. He doesn't count much at all, he gives you body cues of what to move & direction. When connecting the previous learned moves to the present moves, he will go slow 2x to help you connect them together. This is the best way to teach & I'm very happy he's teaching it that way. The only thing I could ask is more repetition of normal speed before moving on which would increase the heart rate more. At the end, you only do it 4x in a row w/o stopping. I didn't increase mine at all, I got a little warmer, but nowhere near sweating even with a heater on. The moves here are easier then the level 2 & I was able to get it easily overall, though of course not execute it perfectly since normal speed is very fast. One point teaching just the lower body was stepping to the left & right. "Just like Kindergarten again... Oh my god, you did it, you're AMAZING!" was very funny. His personality really saves the day.
I enjoyed this overall, Sean's great, the music is ok/good, having several dancers to add to the energy is great, having the music piped in so everyone can hear & it doesn't sound overly scripted. He doesn't repeat all the moves already taught every time he finishes teaching another so there isn't so much repetition to make you bored.
The level 1 definitely feels like for beginners. Shawn will only do a couple fast paced moves before going back to step touches a lot. I don't sweat, rarely get out of breath. Most won't have any problem following along perfectly the first time almost. For those new at exercising or low on endurance this is great. For those who exercise regularly, try starting with Level 2, I enjoyed it much better (especially Fat Burning Cardio which is mostly dance moves) & have reviewed it.
The only cons I would say is that there should be more original music... that's a complaint for most workouts as well. The other is that isn't much more aerobics then it is dance moves unlike the commercials suggests. There are a lot of dance workouts now that use real moves as the whole workout & he should too, even if he has to make a separate dance step instruction section. Although, if he breaks it down like he does in the learn to dance section, more at tempo repetitions of just the lower body, then upper, etc. that would make a great workout on it's own.
Truly, there is so much aerobics & toning in the cardio workouts, if it wasn't for Shawn's great personality & teaching & good move routines on the Learn to Dance portions, I would give it 2 1/2 stars. If I wanted straight toning or aerobics, I wouldn't have gotten this which sold itself to not needing to do regular boring aerobics & looped synthesized basic beat music like all the rest.
Movie Review: Fun enough:-) Summary: 4 StarsI just started my workout today using Shaun T's Hip Hop abs and I would say that it is pretty fun. There are some moments where I think Shaun is just a little too into it but he keeps up a good energy level that lasts throughout the entire workout.
I wouldn't say that this is for those looking to get a real challenge. His exercises are mostly focused upon the ab muscles but my arms are burning right now because I did incorporate the weights at the parts where he suggested.
I would recommend it if you are looking for a fun workout. It is not a standalone product; I am currently using Tae-bo and Turbo Jam but if you sometimes want to break away from the intense cardio of the week, have fun but not slack from your workout, this is an awesome product.
Movie Review: Hip Hop Abs Summary: 3 StarsThis woud have been a 5 star rating but I can not use it. I do not
recommend a used product from now on. It has a major scratch in it
making it not able to play. If I could actually use it I am sure it would have been good. Just as the workout starts the dvd starts
skipping making me crazy!!!
Movie Review: THIS WORKS!!! Summary: 5 StarsThis works!! After just a week of exercising to the Total Burn (30 minutes) workout, I can tell the difference! A six pack is forming!! The Total Burn (40 minutes) with the dumbells is challenging, but also fun! My stomach is getting firmer right before my very eyes! The dance moves makes this DVD absoulutely addictive! I now look forward to exercising! Highly recommend Shaun T!!
