Movie Review: GREAT MOVIE - lousy transfer
Summary: 3 Stars
The only reason this doesn't get five stars is because of the quality. I've been looking for this movie for years so bought it anyway despite the warnings about the lousy DVD quality. I had taped this from TV and the tape basically disintegrated. I'm glad I bought this CD but the quality is just as bad as on VHS. My recommendation is that if you have a decent VHS copy don't buy this. If you don't have it, buy this and wait for the release of a better quality DVD.

Originally shown as a two-part TV movie this is a gripping recreation of the horrible tragedy of the November 1978 mass suicide of 913 people at the South American religious"colony" of Jonestown. Powers Boothe's portrayal of the cult-leader Reverend Jim Jones earned him an "Emmy" and the film traces the life of Jones from his early activist period to his rise as a modern day messiah. The climatic suicide scenes are convincingly recreated in a near-documentary style and the whole production benefits from a huge supporting cast of excellent players.
