Movie Reviews of Gunga DinMovie Review: Gunga Din -- the first Indiana Jones movie Summary: 5 Stars
Gunga Din is one of those under rated films of the late 1930s that had a huge influence on later films. Both the Beatles Help and later Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom used Gunga Din as a model. But Gunga Din has the ability to combine pathos and humor in a way that both later films failed, and in the end, serves as one of my favorite action films.
While it does not have the remarkable special effects of Temple of Doom, Gunga Din gives us characters that are richer and in some way significantly more human. Both Douglas Fairbanks and Cary Grant serve as early versions of Harrison Ford.
We even get some similar humor -- especially in dealing with elephants -- and similar scenery.
I tend to watch Gunga Din after I have watched Temple of Doom. They make a great double feature.
Movie Review: Probably the best adventure film Summary: 5 Stars
I first saw this movie as a child in the early 40's growing up in Israel (then, Palestine). I remember that us kids had a special meeting to discuss this movie and we could not disagree on anything, this was the best thing that happened to us, it was the fulfilment of all our dreams. Except one kid, a little older than the rest, about 12,declared that the British oppressed the Indians and didn't deserve praise. We got rid of his and continued our 'discussion'. The musical score is fantastic, and to this day, I find myself whistling it. I have seen this movie countless of times and each time I watch it its a new pleasure. Everything about it, the story, cast, direction, humor, are superb and no remake can come close. Definitely, the best adventure movie ever made.
Movie Review: "The Best of the Best" Summary: 5 Stars
How it took this long to have this classic put on DVD remains a great mystery but let's not dwell on the past but rejoice that a great film can now be enjoyed by the masses and especially the younger generation that has grown up on special effects.
This is a film that just gets better with age and no matter how many times you view it, it is always enjoyable. Cary Grant, Victor McLaglen and Douglas Fairbanks, Jr. How many "newer" movies can boast this great cast with not one but 3 very good actors that mesh so well together. Action, comedy, good story line and a black and white film that still holds its own on any level of standards.
This film is a definite "must have" for any film collection.
Movie Review: An Underrated Masterpiece Summary: 5 Stars
Few movie watchers realize there were more classics from 1939 than just "Gone With the Wind" and "The Wizard of Oz."
This movie is a beautiful blend of adventure, suspense, and humor. There is great chemistry between Gary Grant, Victor McLaglen, and Douglas Fairbanks, Jr., which are the most enjoyable segments of the movie. However, Gary Grant once again steals the show with his expressions and overall performance. It still amazes me that he never was awarded an Oscar for best actor.
The final scenes with Sam Jaffe (Gunga Din) are very moving and climax a well scripted classic.
