Movie Reviews of Gummo

Movie Review: A Journey Into White Trash America
Summary: 5 Stars

"Gummo" is an unsettling excursion into the depths of white trash America. It's filmed in an almost documentary form that follows two kids as they slaughter cats in all sorts of sadistic ways for the purpose of selling them, sniff glue, and have sex with a mentally retarded prostitute. "Gummo" is packed full of disturbing imagery and random weirdness such as a grotesque looking black dwarf being hit on by a cross dressing homosexual and a shirtless young pre-teen who runs around his town with a pink rabbit ear hat on his head. Although "Gummo" has a few comedic aspects to it, it's a movie that is comical only because of its absurdity. Otherwise, the majority of "Gummo" is starkly bleak in its disclosure of the poor white trash of America and the utter despair, madness, and squalor that they live in. "Gummo" does not make for a comfortable viewing experience and the freaks contained within it are scary because they are real.

Movie Review: best bad film I've seen in a long while
Summary: 5 Stars

'Gummo' is a hard movie to categorise - reminiscent of early John Waters (eg. Pink Flamingoes), Dogme movies like 'The Idiots' and early surrealist films eg. 'Un Chien Andalu' (Dali/ Bunuel), it is clearly not your standard Hollywood feelgood flick.

While it tests the viewers patience at points, it is an ulitmately rewarding, if faintly depressing piece. At least once it is over, you will be glad that you don't have to actually live where the people in the movie do. Or at least, I hope you don't.

Standout moments include the trailer-park guys wrestling a chair, one of the funniest scenes outside of a Chaplin flick, and possible inspiration for 'Jackass'.

This is a faintly incoherent movie, though not as depressing as 'Kids', it is not for everybody, least of all those easily offended. I still can't decide if it is one of the best films I've seen, or the worst. Make your own mind up.

Movie Review: RUDE, CRUDE, DIRTY, DISGUSTING, AND HILLARIOUS !
Summary: 5 Stars

This film has got to be one of the most entertaining pieces of work that I've seen in a while. First off if you lack an open mind or any degree of mental depth, you'll probably write the movie off with one to zero stars. This movie simply just doesn't [care] what you think. I love it! There's no plot and your basically shoved headfirst into rural America. Even though the story supposedly takes place in Xenia, Ohio. The movie was actually filmed in Nashville, TN., which happens to be Harmonie Korine's hometown. This film displays the harsh realities that exist, but are usually ignored in white, lower middle class, American rural areas. If you have a sarchastic/sidistic mind frame, you'll find the movie funny as [heck]! Especially the chair wrestling and bathtub scenes. You can watch this movie over and over again and crack up like it's your first time watching it all over again.

Movie Review: Open up, watch this film
Summary: 5 Stars

The condemnation of this film is both rash and unmerited. This is a portrait of white, lower class life in Ohio, a portrait of a possible life in this world. It's funny, but a review reveals more about the person doing the reviewing than the product itself. This movie is a mere portrait, it is what you make of it. This film is open, free, and invites interpretation and analysis. This is its most rewarding aspect. The negative reviews below reveal a lack of imagination and courage. To watch this film and not take anything from it is a crime to one's self, a complete waste of time. To view this artwork and not appreciate it reveals the contempt for life that some individuals feel; individuals not even willing to embrace the value or potential of one and a half possibly rewarding hours. Watch this film, it offers itself to you, take the opprotunity to be influenced by it.

Movie Review: Sobering, Intriguing...Brilliant
Summary: 5 Stars

Unorthodoxedly skilled, director Harmony Korine has come up with a remarkably honest portrait of the underbelly of American life. He has stripped away pretenses about the underprivilaged realm of the isolated South and shown us a portrait so realistic, it strikes us as surreal.
Violence, sleaziness, subtle prejudice, and undercurrents of restlessness stream through the inhabitants of Xenia Ohio, which in reality Did undergo serious tornado trauma in its past.
The alienated youth compose a ghostlike atmosphere in which everything has free psychological reign on whatever is in its path. Humanity at its lowest, lost and with nothing real to fight for, the degredation is portrayed grittily, and ultimately, hauntingly and touchingly.
A completely necessary piece composed of random sequences of life which compose the message hitting us: how far are we from this?
