Movie Reviews of GummoMovie Review: landmark Dogme 95 film Summary: 5 Stars
I wish that I had the time to do justice to this film. In fact, it's almost too good to review; it's the very kind of movie that you simply have to see to believe. If you've loved the French New Wave and New German Cinema films, particularly Werner Herzog's, you'll probably enjoy Harmony Korine's. Do not use "Kids" as a benchmark; bear in mind, although Korine wrote the screenplay, it was really Larry Clark's vision. "Gummo" is art cinema at it's best. By that, I mean "art cinema" as something unpretentious: The capturing of reality on celluloid. Yes, it's fair to say that the film ridicules "white trash." Let's be serious. White [less fotunate people are] worth ridiculing! It does not pretend to be Cinema Verite, so to call it biased film... well... all film (EVEN Cinema Verité despite its fancy title) is founded in some point of view. I think one does best to watch this film for what it delivers-- great images, great atmosphere-- not what it doesn't. In that sense, Korine brings an originality to the cinematic eye that hasn't been seen in the past 20 years. To discuss it further would [take away some] of its beauty, which lies in the myriad strong reactions that it will produce in any audience.
Movie Review: Surreality Summary: 5 Stars
This film is truly, well, truthful. I love the fact that some parts are completely pointless. I mean, hey...life often is pointless. Life isn't like a "story". GUMMO IS SO LIKE LIFE THAT IT HAS TO BE BOTH COMICAL AND DISTURBING TO THE VIEWER. You know that there are people like this, everywhere, all around us. Deaf-mutes,the mentally ill, paint huffers, albinos, midgets, gays, rednecks, eccentric mothers and silly little kids....I just adore the way the kids are allowed to simply be kids in this film. Some people hate this movie, I think, because they are frightened to see reality paraded on a screen. I personally loved GUMMO and I'll watch it again. We need directors like Harmony Korine to give us films that depict such realistic scenes of the beauty and ugliness of everyday life. And some of the scenes are so, so funny! I laughed and I wretched! You can't walk away from GUMMO with the delusion that everyone is a boring, bourgeosie, middle-class, middle-brow yuppie. Because Korine throws it in our face that it's simply not true...lots of people are just unapologetically weird. And THAT, my friend, is entertainment.
Movie Review: Interesting, Bizarre......GOOD!!!!!! Summary: 5 Stars
I actually bought this soundtrack before I saw the movie. Even after listening to the soundtrack a few hundred times I was still unsure of whether or not to watch "Gummo". All too often movies will be terrible but have excellent soundtracks. Luckily I was proven wrong. Right from the get go "Gummo" had my attention. I mean how could a kid who's wearing pink bunny ears, smoking and taking a leak off of an overpass not get your interest??? The characters in this movie are some of the best I've ever seen in any movie, in fact at many points during the film you'll find yourself wondering, "Are these actors?!?!?! Or is this for real." As far as I'm concerned it's a toss up between the two. I've also found that many people that are into metal and grindcore (me included) seem to love this movie. How can you not like the scene when Tummler and Solomon (wearing a denim jacket with a Slayer patch) are riding down the street while Sleeps "Dragonaut" blasts in the background. I never really understood why I enjoy this movie so much.....maybe I should just leave it at that.
Movie Review: What the hell? Summary: 5 Stars
This is the weirdest movie I've ever seen. And I've seen a lot of weird ones. Man Bites Dog, Eraserhead, and Cube for example. But this is just...I don't know.
The 'plot,' if there is one, is set in Xenia, Ohio. People are just living their lives after a devastating tornado. I actually asked one of my friends at a record store about this movie, and he said it hit home to him because he used to live in Xenia. So, it is a bit realistic. I don't know if he's ever met some of the charecters though. Tummler and Solomon (named after the Sleep song, Evil Gypsy/Solomon's Theme) are complete weirdos. Solomon takes baths in filthy water, and Tummler has sex with retarded prositutes. I wasn't saying this was going to make sense, people.
There's no real meaning in Gummo, and that's what I like about it. There's no underlying moral and no big message. Harmony Korine just felt like making it, and for that, I congratulate him. If you like weird movies like Man Bites Dog, then this is for you. Now, I gotta go work out to Madonna.
Movie Review: You never lived there Summary: 5 Stars
I love these reviewers who -- almost in the same breath -- express how disgusted they are by the folks portrayed in Gummo, and their outrage at Korine for "exploiting" them. I've no doubt some people appreciate this movie only as a freakshow. Can't be helped. But I watched it more with a sense of familiarity than shock. I knew these people. I still get calls from these people. Some of them I still call back. No, I didn't grow up in Korine's Xenia, but I have fond memories of places much like it. People compare this movie to Jerry Springer. Springer doesn't make me homesick. For all their talk of exploitation, most reveiwers could've summed up their response in a single line: "I DON'T WANT TO LOOK AT THESE PEOPLE." Paul Tatara would never step into my old neighborhood for fear of accidentally making eye contact with guys like the ones I used to get drunk with. Screw you, Paul. And double for Elspeth Haughton.
