Movie Reviews of Gross AnatomyMovie Review: "Here it is, IN BOLD TYPE." Summary: 5 Stars
Gross Anatomy (1989) is a very accurate depiction of what medical school is like, but with a special twist: a carefree slacker of sorts (Joe Slovak) doesn't want to conform to the serious mindset that often accompanies being a medical student. Slovak's attitude and brilliance seem to work throughout the film, but is tested periodically by his peers and instructors who grow frustrated and impatient with his relaxed approach. If it were real life, I think that everyone he came in contact with would respect his down-to-earthness. Joe Slovak marches to the beat of a different drum, and for that, he is a refreshing character. Hey.......tomorrow's tomorrow!!!!"
Movie Review: Funny film Summary: 4 Stars
This romantic comedy/drama is a pretty enjoyable film that follows the lives of medical students through their trials & tribulations with the focus on Joe Slovak as the carefree medical student clowning around in the stres-filled medical setting. Like others said, I think this move has been a bit overlooked. It is a little bit predictable but the earnest performances by all make up for that.
Like someone else said, the movie does still hold up well in this day & age, there's nothing about it that really makes it dated. The student life is one we can all identify with; you don't need to be a medical student to get it.
I thought Matthew Modine was really, really funny in this role. His budding relationship with Zuniga is a central focus of the movie. They have great chemistry together and it is interesting to see how it develops over the film.
Good, solid movie for some laughs.
Movie Review: very good Summary: 4 Stars
Just got done watching this for the 3rd time. I saw it once on TV long ago, then found it in the $5.00 Walmart bin and have seen it twice at home. Modine does a great job here and you really fall for the spirit of his character in this film. I suspect not many people with his flair for independence survive in this world but his obvious talent carries him through with the powers that be. It is interesting to see his lab partners torn between throwing him under the bus for guilt by association and their attraction to his joie de vivre. The interaction with his instructor Dr Woodruf who tries to extract the most from him is very interesting as is the sometimes strained relationship with his lab partner love interest. I'll probably see this a 4th time some day -
Movie Review: Tried but true rules of boy meets girl set against Med School!! Summary: 4 Stars
I originally watched this movie when it came out because of Matthew Modine. I knew what was going to happen as soon as it started. He was a slacker who would come around because of the girl. If you remember, there was a lot of those kind of movies back then. The reason it worked so well with me was because the actor's made me care about what they did. I bought the VHS tape when it came out. Now, I'm updating to the DVD. The movie holds up very well in this day and age. This movie combined with Vision Quest show why Matthew Modine was a very good actor.
Movie Review: No Special Features Summary: 4 Stars
If you read all the reviews of this film below based on the VHS version, you'll see it is one of the more enjoyable films of the late 1980s. Everything said about it is correct, and I stand by the praise I gave it as well. I just wanted to alert viewers of the DVD, however, that there are NO special features. It's a bit odd for a DVD not to have any, but that explains why this is is so inexpensive. Of course, the nice thing is, it's widescreen, so you can see the full picture.
