Movie Reviews of Greyfriars BobbyMovie Review: DISNEY DOES DOGS AND SCOTLAND PROUD-TRUE STORY OF DEVOTION AND LOVE FROM MAN'S BEST FRIEND Summary: 5 Stars
A fun, heartwarming story of a small Skye Terrior who spent his remaining life resting and guarding his master's grave. The tale is true and from the events that are recorded from the mid 1800s in Edinburgh, Scotland. You will be richly blessed by seeing this dramatic tale of one dog, and how he came to be loved by an entire town, for decades and decades.
Disney has taken the account of Bobby, the dog to become known as "Greyfriars Bobby", from the book by the same name written by Eleanor Atkinson, an Indiana author for youth. The DVD Disney film stick closely to the author's account which is known to be a bit of an embellishment to the actual account, making it a bit more dramatic for children. It is a superb story, and a beautiful and exciting film created in the always high quality of any Disney production. This is a true FAMILY FILM, appreciated by all ages--4 to 104 years.
Sets are typical Disney delights, historically accurate, beautifully presented, and worthy of the "CLASSIC" labeling from all aspects of the production.
Let yourself slip back into the 1850's and 1860's of old Edinburgh and experience Greyfriars Bobby and his story firsthand.
Also, pick up the book, Greyfriars Bobby, by Eleanor Atkinson, and gift it to a dog lover or a child. See my 5-star review under books.
Movie Review: Dear sweet Bobby Summary: 5 Stars
This is a great family movie that can be shown to all ages. My children fell in love with Bobby, and the way he camped on his dead owner's grave every night. This is a true story about a dog that fell in love with one of his owner's employees (Jock), and pretty much adopted this Jock himself by running away from home to join the old man in another town. He stayed with the old man until one night Jock died. Bobby (the dog), went into the Kirkyard (the name of the cemetery) every night and slept on Jock's grave (It's said that Bobby did this for fourteen years, until he died himself). During the day Bobby went to a local restaurant to eat where he thought Jock would show up, as this was Jock's usual hangout at lunch time. The whole town fell in love with Bobby knowing that his owner was gone. They fed him and bathed him, but he wasn't liscensed, so it was up to the courts as to what would happen to dear sweet Bobby. Watch this story to find out for yourself. This is a touching story about a sweet dog, that only wanted to be with his master no matter what it took. The scenery is beautiful, and the children did a wonderful job acting. Very well made, and will be watched many more times. A must see for all dog lovers. A story about a dog's love for his owner, and how loyal he was to Jock, dead or alive.
Movie Review: A Must See For Any One Who Loves Animals!!!!! Summary: 5 Stars
Disney DVD has released the DVD of Greyfriars Bobby, a 1961
movie. This is based on the true story of Bobby, a Skye
terrier. The story takes place in the mid-1800's. Bobby was
so devoted to the shepherd he worked with, that when the
shepherd died, the little dog spent 14 years visiting his
grave. People living in the surrounding neighborhood were
touched by the little dog's devotion and they took care of
him. There is a statue of Greyfriars Bobby in Edinburgh.
Obviously, you will want to have a box of tissues ready while
watching this film but I promise it does have a happy ending. This is a lovely film which will charm any one who loves animals. The actors are wonderful, the dog is adorable, and the story is put together in an unusual manner that works quite well. After watching this film you will want to give your own animal companions a hug.
This film may upset young children.
Very highly recommended.

Movie Review: MAN'S BEST FRIEND Summary: 5 Stars
GREYFRIARS BOBBY is classic 60s Disney. We meet an old shepherd who for years has cared for a wee skye terrier named Bobby. When the shepherd's employer says he can no longer afford his services, Old Jock returns to Edinburgh, and leaves Bobby for the master's little girl to keep. However, Bobby has other plans and runs away to join his master. Old Jock contracts pneumonia, and dies, leaving Bobby to fend for himself.
Of course, Bobby is loyal to his master and sleeps on his grave, frustrating the crusty old clerkyard keeper. Bobby is also cared for by the kindly and lonely tavern owner. Eventually who owns Bobby comes to a courtroom showdown, and a wonderful climax.
Laurence Naismith, one of England's finest character actors, steals the show as Mr. Trail, the innkeeper who wants to keep Bobby; Donald Crisp is fine as Mr. Brown, the groundskeeper, and Vincent Winter, one of Disney's favorite child actors, shines as little crippled Tommy, and the remaining supporting cast is splendid.
A leisurely paced family drama, demonstrates why Disney's films were such winners.
Movie Review: Buried in the depths of my past-I was just there. Summary: 5 Stars
I have three Scotish surnames in my ancestry. So I could not pass up a tour to see the British Isles this past summer with our church choir. The trip finale was to sing in the magnificent St. Giles Cathedral just a block or so down from Greyfriar's courtyard and Abbey. The impressive Scotish National Museum is just across the street. A statue errected to Bobbie is in the fork in the street just in front of two businesses named for the beloved animal. Inside the wrought iron gates is Bobbie's grave site and a walk down to the right is John Grey's grave stone paid for by "the American friends of Greyfriar's Bobbie". It is coming close to half a century ago when I saw the disney movie. I have to admit that it was the most touching experience for me there in downtown Edinburgh. What a powerful movie for such feelings to well up inside of me so many years (decades) later! I took some high definition video along the sidewalk in front of the address. I will try to post it as a video review if I can get it stepped down to a lower resolution.
