Movie Reviews of GremlinsMovie Review: Fiendishly clever Christmas flick that is family-friendly, but may scare the younger tots Summary: 5 Stars
Steven Spielberg, Joe Dante, and Chris Columbus collaborated on this modern Christmas classic. "Gremlins" is a mild horror film set in a small town that is easily a stand-in for Bedford Falls from "It's a Wonderful Life." Leave it to these three guys to inject a lot of subversive, sarcastic humor, using the vile Gremlins as their horror-comic tool.
The plot is well-known - a wacky inventor brings home the "perfect Christmas present" from a mysterious Chinese shop - a Mogwai. The Mogwai, Gizmo, is beyond cute (particularly thanks to the voice work of Howie Mandel). But Giz has flaws - namely 3: He hates bright light, he can't get wet, and you can never, ever feed him after midnight.
Of course, these rules get broken throughout the film, with terrific results. The Gremlins overrun the town, causing hilarious, murderous mayhem along the way. It's up to Zach Gilligan and Phoebe Cates as the stereotypically-nice guy and gal to save the day.
The plot is simple - the joy is in its execution. This is one of the best Christmas movies to come out in recent years and is a wonderful antidote to all the holiday movies that focus solely on existential angst or rampant commercialism, although there is just enough anti-commercialism message in this flick to make it worthwhile.
To be fair, "Gremlins" is light-hearted stuff, but can be a little scary if you're kids are young (say, 6 or so, older kids should do just fine). A couple of humans and a gazillion Gremlins meet their makers in unpleasant ways, and the Gremlins are pretty scary up close. The kids will quickly adopt Gizmo as a favorite, but there are quite a few dark moments - and you'll never look at a microwave the same way again.
Movie Review: A good comedy with a Stripe of horror. Summary: 5 Stars
The Gremlins is my second favorite film. The character I hate the most is that old bag that's mean. The rich jerk. My favorite part is when the drunk in the bar says " Just gimme one more beer. I'll help you clean up.In this film a the father of the hero purchases a moigoi(excuse me if that's a spelling error) illicitly through a vendor's grandson. With the moigoi(called Gizmo) comes 3 rules don't get it wet, don't show him light especially sunlight it'll end Gizmo's life, or DON'T FEED HIM AFTER MIDNIGHT or else, swine. Of course Gizmo gets wet by that punk Corey Feldman's character and Gizmo multiplies giving evil Gremlins. The evil gremlins trick the hero William into feeding them after midnight and they turn evil and try to kill everyone in the town. So the dumb heroes chase them and try to stop them. Of course my wretchedly boring description isn't detailed and the movie has a lot more action. But the second one is better because the villain is a genius gremlin instead of a drooling stupid gremlin. Well this is an excellent film anyway. 5 star material. Well lets hope a DVD of the second Gremlins film will be released soon.
Movie Review: Violent, Yet A Great Family Movie! Summary: 5 Stars
Hi, movie fans! If you like movies, you gotta see this 1984 family classic. It starts when an Asian man gives another man a cute little furry critter called a Gremlin named Gizmo, which he then gives to his son (Zach Galligan). The father has been given important instructions: Don't get him wet, don't feed him after midnight, and don't expose him after midnight. The son accidentally gets him wet, and little furballs come out of him, which become Gremlins just like Gizmo. They are very cool just like him, but then the guy accidentally feeds all of them, but Gizmo, after midnight, because his clock says 11:30, but the cord was bitten by the Gremlins. They then become evil and ugly, and destroy much of the town. Galligan and his friend (Phoebe Cates, Drop Dead Fred) must stop them before it's too late. This movie was produced by Steven Spielberg and directed by Joe Dante (both of whom directed parts of "Twilight Zone: The Movie"), and in parts is violent, yet it is a GREAT family movie. You gotta see it! It's VERY KOOL!
Movie Review: Classic! Summary: 5 Stars
I was thinking about 80's things that I really loved, things all kids today MUST know about to be complete little beings...and Gremlins was one that I thought my kids had to see. So I ordered it, told my kids how when my sister was 5 or 6 she was terrified of Gremlins and hid behind the sofa when we watched it... they got a kick out of that. We watched it, they loved it (so did I!) No one cried or hid. They of course now want a Gremlin of their own. I had them call my sister after we watched the movie. When they told her they had just watched Gremlins- she only remembering being scared asked me - You let them watch that movie?! Isn't it scary!. How funny that at 24 she is still scared of Gremlins. My kids giggled and teased her. This is a must see - along with Labrynth, ET, original Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Back to the Future...all those GOOD, FAIRLY CLEAN 80's movies. Was a blast seeing Gizmo again...we have watched it 4 times in 2 weeks.
