Movie Reviews of Gremlins 2 - The New Batch

Movie Review: Gremlins sequel piece of bizzare cinema
Summary: 4 Stars

Gremlins 2 existed in a time when sequels were running rampant. Some were good, some bad, but all were big Hollywood fare, ruling the multiplexes in the summertime.

Gremlins 2 could have easily succumbed to being a formulaic sequel, but instead takes a very different, somewhat absurd direction. In fact, its easily classifiable as a piece of very bizarre cinema - that is there are few words to describe it and even fewer movies to compare it to.

To be fair, there is something formulaic about the film - placing our heroes in the middle of Times Square, our young hero working for a big shot in Manhattan, and later sequences full of tons of our title characters. But the film has such strange bits that its in a class all its own.

For starters, Bugs and Daffy introduce the movie. That should set the mood right there. The movie is self referential, featuring a sequence where Leonard Maltin is reviewing the original film. The straw that breaks the camels back, however is when the Gremlins break the fourth wall. Well, they don't just break the fourth wall, they break the film. The second half of the film just screams "look what they let us get away with!" and is equatable to biting the hand that feeds you, poking fun at hollywood film excess.

What's nice is that the DVD keeps the theme going, inviting viewers to see all the little jokes they placed in the film, including a very notable easter egg involving the video release of the film. Joe Dante is in for a commentary and there's some deleted sequences to boot. If you're a fan of Gremlins or just a piece of strange cinema, check this out. This is a surefire cult classic. The fact that Christopher Lee turns in a performance as Doctor named Doctor Catheter should say it all.

Movie Review: More Humor Makes This A More Appealing Gremlins Film
Summary: 4 Stars

When this came out, it was an amazing movie because these Gremlin creatures looked so lifelike. They still look pretty real. What I like best about this film is that it took the hard edge off the first one and made it more of a comedy. To me, this sequel was more entertaining than the first film and one I would watch a lot more times. It's also family-friendly.

There are so many jokes and wild scenes in here it would many viewings to catch them all. For movie buffs, it's especially fun with all the references to other films in here.

However, it should be pointed out that there are still plenty of scenes where the gremlins are nasty and attack people, so the film is still horror-like in that respect. It may be played for comedic purposes, but these creatures are anything but friendly. In other words, there is still a bit of a hard edge in here for people who want that.

Phoebe Cates and Zach Galligan reprise their roles as the cute, small-town, wholesome (despite not being married, however) couple who live together who, of course, know all about these gremlins.

It was nice to see Jackie Joseph (of the original "Little Shop Of Horrors") again as well as some other well-known characters such as Christopher Lee, Robert Prosky, Dick Miller and Keye Luke.

The film just flies by, which tells you it's entertaining.

Movie Review: The wackiness of it all...
Summary: 4 Stars

When I was a child, very young, four or five, or maybe a little older, but not much, I was obsessed with the original Gremlins, I loved it, and was frightened by it. It's amazing how easy it is to frighten a little child with a movie that seems so... silly now. To this day I am still a huge fan of the two Gremlins movies. However the second is definitely my favorite of the two. Why? Simple, it took the comical elements of the first one to the extreme. While Gremlins was meant to be a B-movie, this is meant to be a comedy. Gremlins was simply too good of a movie to become the B-Movie that they had hoped for. Instead it became a classic of dark comedy, which is good because B-Movies don't get the recognition they deserve.
I don't know why there was a drastic change of direction with the sequel, but I was grateful for it because I'm a huge fan of high comedy in the vein of Monty Python, Zucker movies, and well... this! If you're looking for a horror movie look elsewhere. This movie is as zany as silly monster movies get! The movie also features some impressive pre-CGI special effects, for its day, and the puppets were quite well done. All in all if you have not seen this movie I highly recommend at least giving it a rent because I'm pretty sure that most people would enjoy it, although probably much more so if they have seen the original.

Movie Review: More Antics From Gizmo And His Rowdy Relatives
Summary: 4 Stars

GREMLINS 2 is a solid sequel that has its reptilian tongue planted firmly in its scaly cheek. The setting has moved from a small town, Kingston Falls, to the ultimate high tech fantasy building in Manhattan. There the young lovers from the original Gremlins, Billy (Zach Gilligan) and Kate (Phoebe Cates), find employment as well as their old pal Gizmo the Mogwai being tortured in a science lab. As we learned in the first film when Gizmo gets wet he multiplies and his "offspring" are mischievious to say the least. This new batch is soon fortified with special potions from the lab giving them diverse powers including flight, web spinning, great intelligence and apparently the ability to produce musical spectaculars. Pop culture references abound, some of which are all ready a bit dated. Some of the sight gags that may have worked well in the theater do not really translate to the small screen. Despite these minor flaws this is an entertaining film which is suitable for tweens and their families.

Movie Review: An Old Favorite
Summary: 4 Stars

This was one of my favorite movies as a kid. I think it's a lot better than the first Gremlins actually. The special effects are improved quite a bit at the very least. It also has a much more lighthearted tone than the first film.

What I like about this film is it's like a violent family film. It's pretty unique. Monsters killing tons of people, and then getting melted into goo at the end. Sounds pretty violent. Even looks pretty violent. Still, it has a family film feel to it. The gremlins do a lot of cheesy comic routines, appropriate for every member of the family.

I can't see how the good guys were able to play these role with a straight face, because the gremlins are goofy as heck. I like the gremlins. Gizmo is all right too.

If you have kids around the age of 12, rent this for them and see what they think of it.
