Movie Review: Prince Pumping The Big Noise In The Night
Summary: 5 Stars

Now this is one of those films that get's put into the Golden Raspberry variety of 80's/90's B level films even though it's essentially a follow up to Purple Rain. Personally I feel some of that might have to do with Prince's persona at this point in general. Towards the end of the 80's Prince was continually seeking a very different musical vision, seeking artistic vision with a spiritual bent that resulted in a lot of critical acclaim but a dip in sales. And this movie arrived smack dab during that period. Obviously somewhat inspired by his Lovesexy era this movie showcased the same basic characters as Purple Rain; The Kid,The Time and even Jill Jones shows up again. On the other hand this movie's plot isn't as easy to follow and takes a few watchings to fully understand it's points. Basically The Kid and The Time now have two seperate and competing clubs alongside to others-George's (run in the film by George Clinton) and Melody Cool, owned by a like named character played by Mavis Staples. The Time and The Kid are both quite different characters in this film. The Time are portrayed now as more confrontational adversaries to The Kid in trying to close his club Glam Slam because, again his music isn't making any money. The Kids' arrogent cockiness in the first film is replaced by a more reflective, brooding character whose ego manifests itself more like a man on a quest than someone trying to prove themselves. Again musical performances on both ends are the order of the day. The Time get a lot more songs here and,not only that the leading lady element is quite different. A mysteious lady calling herself Aura (Ingrid Chavez) appears out of nowhere, playing The Kid and Morris off eachother in an effort to turn Morris towards giving The Kid more of a chance and seems to appear when The Kid is in danger of losing his fight. Unlike his previous leading lady The Kid treats Aura with a lot of respect and maturity while Morris would....of course rather look at his own face in his silver compact. It's a more metaphorical good versus evil story in which the definitions of both aren't 100% clear (are they ever) and the musical performances play out the narrative. In the end Aura either accidently or purposely sacrifices herself and it's The Kid's obvious emotional agony as he sings "Still Would Stand All Time" as if it were THE gospel sways Morris to relent and let The Kid do his thing. The musical performances, much as Prince's subsequent Nude tour features a lot of dancers and bright primary colors that seperate this from the Prince of 1984 along with performances from Mavis,George and Tevin Campbell. So Prince and The Time aren't the only musical focus of this film either. It showcases a different movie from a different kind of Prince and even if many like it where others don't it's an entirely different outlook than Prince's 80's experience.

Movie Review: Way ahead of the juvenile Purple Rain
Summary: 5 Stars

I always felt that PR was a rather tacky film; the only thing I did care about it was, of course, the music. That seemed to be the main reason I didn't try this movie, thinking it would be another PR. But that just isn't the case. Yeah, it's the sequel of sorts, but it's much less a movie about Prince/The Kid as was PR, and more Prince's music taking life on film. It takes on a musical film quality, too; instead of just seeing Prince and the Time on stage, you see music performed on the streets, atop buildings, and while that all may seem a little cliche, Prince's deliverence takes that cheapness away from the atmosphere.

Another point is that this movie is much classier; the music is more refined (though I'm sure many will disagree that the soundtrack is better than PR); there is no nudity only moments of suggestion, a very appreciated direction (the movie definitely has sexuality, but not so blatant); it's funny and often cute, but not corny (and Morris Day is perhaps the greatest, and oddest, villian ever); and it's a movie by/of Prince, so there really wasn't much of a third party to drag the film from his own vision. Honestly I probably can't say enough good things about it. Oh, and I may as well say that even though Prince once again wins over the bad with the projection of a strong ballad, it wasn't done in the uber-cheesy way that resolved Purple Rain.

And above all the movie really inspired me. Instead of Prince being torn between his music, sex, and a rival, in GB he struggles between his music, business, and love; it's to me the 'big picture' that The Kid from Purple Rain wasn't seeing. I really felt what Prince meant to do, to rise above the things that tear away and bite at art.

I do hope that people's reactions to this movie aren't the only reason keeping Prince from releasing any more of his alleged films. Each of his albums really are a story in their own right, and this film is a visualization of such a story. If Prince released a film for every album he made, I'd love them all just the way I love the music (though I think I'd feel a little differently toward the rhetorical film of his Come album).

Movie Review: Funky Town
Summary: 5 Stars

From the immortal words of "Starfish and Coffee"..."If u set ur mind free baby, maybe u'll understand"....That is the best way to sum up Graffiti Bridge. U have 2 open ur mind and take the journey with Prince. Have a couple of glasses of red wine and share ur bed, watch Graffiti Bridge and immerge urself in the mystical world of Prince. I enjoyed the trip and let Prince take control and really get n2 tha movie. I loved hearing and watching "Elephant and Flowers" and "Tha ? of U". It's some of Prince's best works incorporated into film. The message of Graffiti Bridge is simple, DON'T GIVE UP HOPE. I loved being in Prince's mystical Graffiti Bridge world, it's better than any reality I know. I wish I could live in Prince's world. There are no rulez in Paisley Park. Graffiti Bridge is a wonderful lil film and I enjoyed being a willing participant in tha journey. It all comez out in tha Review: Watch it and appreciate the beautiful music and Prince
Summary: 5 Stars OK, as a hollywood hit movie..this won't cut it. But as a fun movie with great music and lovely sights of Prince...it's a must have!! I love this movie, I watch it daily. I am in love with the performances of Joy in Repetition, The Question of U, and Thieves in the Temple!! Prince is absolutely gorgeous in this movie, perhaps the best of his 3 motion pics. Morris Day and the Time performances are fun and very theatrical. Morris Day and Jerome are their normal comical selves!! They keep me laughing on this movie. As a Prince fan, it is awesome, Prince has some very adorable points in this movie. I would suggest it as a extremely long video or funny documentary, though it has a very serious plot and has a very serious ending. Enjoy the movie and the music, it's alot of fun on a very non hollywood level. I'm so glad to own it!

Movie Review: I Love Prince
Summary: 5 Stars

I am truly a Prince fan. I think he is one of the greatest. This movie was not the best. Prince has so much soul, energy and life to his music. It might be a little different, but it makes him unique. I will continue to support his music and his movies. If you want to see something new and different then you should get this. I enjoyed it.
