Movie Reviews of Gothika (Widescreen Edition) (Snap Case)

Movie Review: SORELY UNDERRATED! 9.25 OUT OF 10
Summary: 5 Stars

I really don't understand the beef people have with this film. Sure, the plot may not make sense entirely, but it's a damn fine thriller that is certainly more engaging than a good number of thrillers I've seen (Good God, help me erase the memories of 88 Minutes! Worst thriller ever!). I also think the hatred for this film stems from people's hatred of Dark Castle films (I've yet to hate any of their films. For an even better thriller try Orphan, which was also by them!). Gothika is a strange, mystifying, and flawed piece of work that was very engaging and quite creepy with its bizarre and inspired imagery.
WHAT IT'S ABOUT: Dr. Miranda Grey is a psychiatrist who works at an institution for the mentally insane, and also happens to be married to the man who runs the facility named Doug. One night when coming home, she almost hits a girl on the road and when she gets out of her car to help the girl, the girl grabs her and seemingly possesses her. The next day Miranda wakes up in a cell of the facility she used to work at and is accused of brutally murdering her husband by butchering him with an axe. No one believes that she didn't do it and she is now experiencing strange visions of a dead girl named Rachel who died four years earlier. To appease the ghost, Miranda must find a way to investigate what happened to Rachel and begins to unravel a series of horrific and devastating secrets that all come together and start a fight for survival and revenge.
MUSIC: The music is very eerie and bizarre, but then again I have yet to hear a bad musical score in a Dark Castle horror flick (Say what you will about the overall quality of their films, but you have to admit the music is good!). It fits this film perfectly to go with its terrific atmosphere.
ACTING: Halle Berry does a fantastic job with her performance, and I wish she would get better roles like this than what she would later get involved with in her acting career. I had some difficulty at first seeing Robert Downey Jr. play a psychiatrist, but then I got used to it and he did a good job as well. Penelope Cruz was also great, even though her role wasn't as big and she really did pull off being a crazy person that you might be afraid of. Overall, I have no complaints about the acting, or really even the dialogue.
ACTION: This film is morbid and at times very disturbing with its imagery and gore. Watching Berry's character drift into insanity and torment was striking and believable which definitely carried the film to great heights just with her performance. Her struggles were very fascinating, and at times very intense. The imagery and story were very fascinating and interesting, and this film also throws in some shocking plot twists that will certainly take the viewer by surprise. It was very entertaining and never boring.
OVERALL: If you give it a chance, Gothika is a film well-worth viewing. It's creepy, disturbing, strange, and fascinating all at once. It also has a stunning visual look and great musical score to go with everything else. I definitely recommend it.
THE GOOD: Good story, great acting, great music, great visual look, and its imagery is intriguing and quite good.
THE BAD: Sometimes the film can be inconsistent.
