Movie Review: A haunted prison - when shrinks get shrunk!
Summary: 5 Stars
If you're inclined to watch a good, well-done ghost story (and October is the perfect month for that!) then this may be just the film you're looking for. While it is more in line with being a thriller than a horror flick, it is nevertheless pretty creepy and is sure to be a fun & macabre date movie.
The film stars Halle Berry and Penelope Cruz as two inmates of a woman's mental institution. Both women are normally quite attractive, but the film does a credible job of dumbing down their beauty to make them look like authentic prisoners. In fact, there were times I could barely believe that Cruz was the same girl who starred in WOMEN ON TOP.
Berry plays a woman who had previously been a shrink at the institution. That is to say, until she flipped out and killed her hubby. As to WHY she went homocidal is the crux of the plot.[As a sidenote, for those who would enjoy watching a psychologist humbled and getting psycho-analzyed herself, this DVD might be worth it JUST for that aspect alone!]
The best parts of this movie are the sets. You don't see the sunshine the entire movie and the grey, dark & morose timbre of the film makes the prison complex seem like something straight out of Dante's INFERNO. They do a good job of creating an eerie feeling that pervades the entire story.
One final note: while one of the reasons this film is categorized as "R" is that there is nudity, keep in mind that there is none. Halle Berry has taken her clothes off in other flicks (SWORDFISH, MONSTER'S BALL) but not this one. Just so you know.
If you like movies such as WHAT LIES BENEATH and THE SIXTH SENSE, you're sure to enjoy this one. In fact, there are some parallels between this DVD and WLB. If movies that explore the concept of a ghostly world beyond are not your thing, then this movie is most assuredly not one that would pique your interest.
