Movie Reviews of Gotham

Movie Review: Rates "Classic" status
Summary: 5 Stars

To anyone who is a fan of ghost stories, I have to say this one is particularly well done. It certainly ranks as one of my all time favorite filmic treatments of the genre. It is done with rare humor, but at the same time gives one a feeling of 1940's style film noir. It could have been filmed in black and white and still been very effective in promoting that dark, mysterious atmosphere.
Tommy Lee Jones portrayal of seedy private eye Eddie Mallard is one of his best performances in my opinion. He is at first understandably condescending to the rich client who wants him to follow his dead wife. After all, he is desperately in need of what he views as "easy money". It becomes and engrossing portrait of a man gradually coming to realize he has fallen hopelessly in love with a phantom. Virginia Madsen, in another marvelously suited role for her, is at once sexy and mysterious, while, at the same time showing us a vulnerable side. She also depicts the venal side of the spirit in a most remarkable fashion. Great characterization is a hallmark of this film, both in the writing and acting, and the rendition of "Danny Boy", sung by a street musician, is the most hauntingly beautiful version of that old song I have ever heard. It actually brought tears to my eyes! In fact, all of the music in this film is near perfect in its suitability to the story. I wish there were a soundtrack available on CD. It is that good.
Do yourself a favor and buy or rent this little known film. I do not think you will regret it.

Movie Review: Most Negative Reviewers Miss That It Is Tongue In Cheek
Summary: 5 Stars

This is a highly effective "film noir" satire with psychic overtones. Most people that review it negatively seem to miss that it is intended to mix genres and spoof the genres in the mix. Give these fine actors some credit. There is a reason why they sometimes seem separate from the material. Although there are some genuine and effective suspense sequences here, the narrative and acting styles of the classic "noir" are being satirized.
Tommy Lee Jones has some wonderful moments in this film as does the gorgeously costumed Virginia Madsen. The scene where the ghost of Jones' grandfather appears to him is ineffably touching.
There is something intriguingly "menage a trois"-ish about the relationship between Jones, his former girlfriend and his writer friend. But this is a film where the mix of several disparate plot strands is meant to raise questions about other elements of the plot.
There is some nudity and profanity.
On the whole, a very entertaining little film.

Movie Review: Tommy Leee doesn't have a: "Ghost Of A Chance!" Or does he??
Summary: 5 Stars

What a: "Diamond in the rough" this little film is!!
Can't Believe i actually found it @ amazon marketplace AND BRAND SPANKING NEW!!! NO film Noir fan's library IS COMPLETE without this ONE!!
I won't *spoil* .. like other writers... where's The Point in seeing it then?? Its Got A young(er) Tommy Lee, Virginia Madsen playing The femme fatal & showing-Off her amazing cleavage at EVERY Opportunity!! ALL this & a "Twist" to The Usual Noir plot-line... "REMARKABLE!" "UNBELIEVEABLE!!" .. They Sure don't Make films like these anymore.. and its OUT LOSS!! But for THE PRICE I PAID YOU CAN: "GET it NOW!!" before its GONE!
You don't like it i'll BUY it back from YOU and give to a/another worthy film Buff... with amazing lines like: "Beer.. mayonnaise??" as Tommy Lee has his faithful pal over to his dingy little Private EYE pad...
"YOU CANNOT LOSE!" .. So WHAT ARE YOU WAITING FOR??

Movie Review: Gotham
Summary: 5 Stars

Gotham is not the original title of this movie. I feel the original title caputured the essence of the movie and it was a mistake to change the title. There is a lot to like about this movie and I only wish it had recieved the credit it deserved when it was first released. Gotham is a tightly woeven story full of suspense and intrigue that keeps the viewer guessing till the end. The actors have done a supurb job, I especially like the character played by Tommy Lee Jones. It is one of the rare opportunities that you get to see him playing the romantic leading man. I especially enjoyed watching his character unravel as he becomes captavated by the 'ghost' he is meant to be investigating. I only wish that the ending was as good as the rest of the movie, as I feel it lets the movie down slightly.

Movie Review: Noir Ghost Story With Tommy Lee Jones and Virginia Madsen--Great Duo!
Summary: 5 Stars

Virginia Madsen always is at her best when she is a saucy vixen. She is a vixen, driven ghost here and she is perfect as one. (See her in the HOT SPOT for another great vixen role). When Tommy Lee Jones is hired to keep her away from her ex, he has met his match, not the reverse! She's mad as hell that her jewels are missing plus carries a whole laundry list of other sins against her which she is back to square once and for all. The atmosphere is as tantalizing as its stars with shadowy, noirish, baroqueness. I don't know why these two were never paired together again. They had great onscreen chemistry. It was originally made for cable when it probably should have been released theatrically. It was that good.
