Movie Reviews of GorgeousMovie Review: Jackie Chan + Love Story = An Chan Film The Girls Will Like! Summary: 4 Stars
That's right all you guys who make your girlfreinds watch Jackie Chan movies because you, unlike them, know that they kick serious arse! I don't know what it is; girls are smarter than us in many respects, but many just don't know great movies when they see them, as they have yet to recognize Jackie Chan movies as great movies. Well, for all those who agree with that statement or fall under that category, behold the remedy! This movie is really a chick flick, but it stars Jackie Chan, and has a few good fight scenes! You might recognize Alan and Howie (the character names in this movie) from Mr. Nice Guy, which I think is cool! It's a love story at heart, that plays out a lot like a modern fairy tale, just as sappy, until one moment near the end... (I'm not telling you any spoilers!) It's also a hero story, and luckily, both sexes love hero stories! Chan overcomes his enemies (there actually aren't any villains in the movie at all), and wins in the end, closing one of the better love stories I've seen, and that's without the action. So guys, if you love Jackie, but your girlfreinds/spouses don't really that much, you have to get this movie! Your girl will no longer get annoyed as you watch Jackie Chan 24/7 like you ussually do. This really is the chick flick made for guys to enjoy too! The only gripes are that Jackie Chan's voice does not match his face at all (even worse than that of City Hunter), and the first action scene was rather weak. Besides that, this movie is a charm, and whould please all with an open mind!
Movie Review: Chan Vs. Allen - Gorgeous Summary: 4 Stars
This is far from Jackie Chan's best film, however it still contains some great scenes and I would definately recommend to any true Chan fan. First off I have to applaud Columbia Tristar for including the Cantinese language option on the DVD. I have been waiting for someone to do this for a long time. Much of Jackie's redubbed Hong Kong movies have lost something in the translation to English. I would recommend that anyone who wants to view movies like First Strike, Operation Condor and Police Story 1 and 2 as they were originally intended should track down the Cantonese versions. Anyway, one of the best things about Gorgeous is the opportunity to see Jackie Chan in a new and different role as a business man. I applaud his attempts to continually try different roles. He displays an often unseen confidence in this role. I really love his English language films like Who Am I?, Mr Nice Guy and Shanghai Noon. However we all have to admit that his English is none to good and this will definately hinder him at times. The action scenes in Gorgeous are top notch and Brad Allen, his nemesis in the movies two outsatnding fights, is absolutely incredible. Jackie Chan may be approaching 50, however he still proves that he can still choreograph the best fights in the business. The movie is somewhat bogged down by 2-3 overly silly scenes, however this is a part of Jackie Chan's persona. Not his best film, however it is one that no Chan fan should miss.
Movie Review: Gorgeous! Summary: 4 Stars
This DVD looses a star for the incredibly bad dub job for Jackie on the English track. To hear the "real" Jackie, view the Cantonese track with English subtitles - so much better. Or, alternatively, get the Asian release, which even has extra scenes, deleted from the American release. Contrary to some of the "dah - action only" reviewers, this movie is terrific! Jackie is trying something new, and it works for those with enough sense to realise it isn't MEANT to be an action flick. Jackie has thrown in a few martial arts/fight sequences (I don't think he can help himself!) and these work very well. The last fight scene between him and Australian stuntman Brad Allan is something to be seen to be believed. Great choreography! The movie has a bit of everything - it is a romance, a drama, a comedy and a fairy-tale with a happy ending. Jackie plays a suave, playboy-type millionaire who meets Bu, a girl from a small island off Taiwan, who comes to Hong Kong in search of "true love" (a la a message in a bottle). What she finds is Tony Leung, in a great performance as the gay friend. She then meets Jackie, falls in love and the story revolves around her attempts to get him to reciprocate. Give this movie a go, just approach it as a romance/drama/comedy NOT an action film and you will enjoy it immensely!
Movie Review: Chan movie with a plot! Summary: 4 Stars
Well jokes aside, this was actually a very entertaining film. I rented it on DVD recently and was very impressed. The DVD itself had some good features. Availability to watch in subtitled form is definently a plus, and Jackie's commentary is hilarious! This is definetly not what I'm used to seeing in a Jackie Chan movie. I'm used to no plot and all action, but this movie had a good plot to it as well. Jackie plays a lonley business man named "C.N.". The movie itself starts out with a young girl named "Bu" who find a message in a bottle saying "I'm waiting for you". Bu decides to take it to the extreme and actually go to Hong Kong to find who wrote the note. Well she was dissapointed finding who the note belonged to, but stayed in Hong Kong nonetheless, and eventually met C.N." A romance starts between the two, the the movie focuses on their relationship at that point. There's nearly as much action in the movie as Jackie fans are accustumed to, but no need to worry, there are still some action scenes. The fight with Alen was fantastic. The only thing keeping me from giving this movie a full 5 stars, was near the end, where I felt it got a little chessy. Other than that, this is a great movie. If you have DVD make SURE you watch it subtitled.
Movie Review: Sweet story, disappointing dubbing, different fighting Summary: 4 Stars
I'm sure I'm not the first of 44 reviewers to say this, but:The story of Gorgeous is, in a word, sweet. It is somewhat of a "martial-arts Pretty Woman". However, I found the dubbing job to be a bit disappointing, in but one regard: It's NOT Jackie's voice! At least in other recent films such as Rush Hour (which preceded this one), he used his own voice (and the audio was on-the-mark). But here... I don't know why he does this from time to time... Maybe because he doesn't have time to rehearse all the lines in English himself. Other than that, there are some good action sequences, but the fighting is a bit different. The highlight action scenes are between himself and this young American(?) kickboxing champ. And that is about it -- kickboxing! One fight, in the first half of the film, is trademark Chan, involving his motorcycle and four assailants with baseball bats. Quite cleverly done! Were it not for this scene, I think that any action star would've been able to pull it off (the movie, that is). All in all, I was laughing out loud--by myself--to many of the comical scenes. This movie is definitely worth seeing--about three times oughtta do it.
