Movie Reviews of Goodnight Mister Tom

Movie Review: Goodnight Mister Tom
Summary: 4 Stars

A superb but gentle drama for anyone who has a warm heart inside their body. Very plausible acting from the young boy and mentor John Thaw as the 'defrosting' senior. Not a tear jerker but the warmth of the human spirit and heart show through the tragedy of this kid's family setting and England struggling with war. A good narrative with some lovely rural settings. Very satisfying.

Movie Review: I love this film
Summary: 4 Stars

This is a great film. I use it in my middle school English classroom after reading the novel. Of course, the novel is better (surprise, surprise) but the acting in this is superb and makes up for the change in storyline. I hightly recommend that you see this--historically accurate!

Movie Review: very nice little movie, a gem
Summary: 4 Stars

a nicely scripted movie, very warm to your heart. the boy is a very talented young actor, wishing him well in the coming future in performing art. the countryside scenary simply blows you away, so green and so peaceful. lovely little movie.

Movie Review: Great story, poor acting
Summary: 3 Stars

I am a HUGE fan of the book, Good Night Mr. Tom. However, the movie just does not live up to the book. The acting by both Will and Mr. Tom is poor, especially by Will. The story itself is so good that given good acting, this could have been a great movie. However, the poor acting really put a damper on things. In addition, the movie omitted huge parts of the book. Will's relationship with his friends are not really developed, for example. In fact, basically all the story points are underdeveloped in the movie compared to the book. As a result, the emotion just isn't there.

However, none of these drawbacks can take away the fact that this is just a wonderful, heart-warming story. If you were a fan of the book, you'll probably enjoy it. I'd read the book first, though. The movie, as is so often the case, just isn't as good.
