Movie Review: Goodnight Mister Tom

Goodnight Mister Tom is a story that takes place in England during the early phase of WWII. The southern cities were bombed almost nightly and children were sent north to be placed in other homes , but this movie is not about war , far from it , it's about love . My mother had borrowed a copy from a library to watch with me ( I was off work for a while after an operation) and I liked this movie so much I had to buy a copy so my friends and family will always have it available to them. This is wholesome stuff , no curse words , no perversion , just an old man who thought he had no purpose left , and a young boy who needs him desperately. I highly recomend it , but you will not want small children to see it. Ladies keep some Kleenex handy.Movie Review: What a Wonderful Story

Since there are quite a few other reviews I don't think mine would add much new. I did notice that this American DVD ssys it is full frame. If you can watch Region 2 DVDs (you have a region-free DVD player or know how to change your players region codes), the U.K. version is widescreen. Also, it is much cheaper; including shipping to the U.S. it would be barely half the Americn version's cost. If you go to Amazon.uk you can log in and purchase there just as you would here. The only thing is that you need to be able to play Region 2 DVDs, which won't play in American and Canadian DVD players.Movie Review: Goodnight Mr. Tom

John Thaw at his best. This film sees the growth of a relationship between two people. A miserable old village handyman and a evacuee from WW2 London, given to his charge by the government. His initial reluctance to have a young stranger in his home subsides as MR. Tom realises how important he is to the boy when the details of his life in London with a mentally ill mother are revealed to him.
There are moments of real trauma for the boy, which makes the honesty of Mr. Tom's feelings for him ever the more powerful. More than just a happy ending, more like an incredible relief.

This is one of the late John Thaw's most poignant performances, as a man hardened by grief, whose apparent heartlessness is disproven by his tenacious, selfless and completely altruistic caring for a young boy evacuated from London during the bombings of World War Two -- and how he grows from being "Mr. Tom" into being "Dad". Excellent performances by the entire cast. Even the dog gives a heartwarming performance. I am so glad it was finally released on DVD for the USA market.Movie Review: Wonderful!

I first saw the movie on PBS. I absolutely loved it and bought the DVD. Mine has very good quality and, watching it the second time, I liked it even better. Then I bought the book- yes, the book is even better, but the movie captures the story and the characters wonderfully. The actors are also great. It is a emotionally strong and you may have to cry a bit. Not for young children. I highly recommend it.
