Movie Reviews of Goodbye, Mr. Chips

Movie Review: I LOVE THIS MOVIE!!!
Summary: 5 Stars

If you've never seen this movie, see it!! Then buy it!! It's an absolutely wonderful movie for all ages. It centers around a teacher and all the years that he spends with his students. It stars Robert Donat who won an Academy Award for this role. He meets the love of his life played by Greer Garson and his shy life changes for the better. I am a movie buff and I especially enjoy movies from the 1930's to 1940's black and white films. Look out for Terry Kilburn's wonderful performance...he appeared as Tiny Tim the year before in "A Christmas Carol". This is one of my favorite movies...the kind they don't make anymore!!P.S. You'll need your tissues handy; it's a tear-jerker!!!

Movie Review: What is not to Love here?
Summary: 5 Stars

Ok, it may be dated but the theme is timeless. Generally it is a movie about letting go and moving onward. Not sure if in our day and age that a teacher could be as respected as Chips, but he exudes something of a foundation for generations of students.

Highlight for me is the romantic interlude when Chips meets Greer Garson's character who becomes his wife. I thought it was nicely done.

The Movie was part of the production line type of movies that MGM had been then, however Irving Thalberg attempted to buy rights to notable books at the time. He arranged this purchase prior to his death and it was a good one indeed.

Movie Review: Engrossing movie that will never let you down!
Summary: 5 Stars

1939. The world is at the eve of the WW2. Robert Donat, a formidable and versatile actor who shone with his famous portrayal of The Count of Monte Christ, gave possibly his lifetime performance around the figure of an abnegate and beloved schoolmaster. Make this visual exercise and perhaps you agree with me: but Donat influenced securely to John Hurt `s style acting.

A fundamental issue in your treasured collection. Donat won a well deserved Academy Award in 1939 for this superb role. Greer Carson (one of my top choice actresses ever) makes an auspicious debut.

Absolutely recommended.

Movie Review: Best sad happy love story I have ever seen
Summary: 5 Stars

What can I say that has not been said by others that have review it. I never waste your time retelling the story, I will leave that to others. But let me say I don't usually watch a video more than 2 or 3 times. Mr Chips is at at least 7 and Gone with the wind only 3 and I cried every time. In many ways it is better than "Gone with the wind". Dare I say that. YES! It is about love in the victorian period that is slow, unselvish and patient and yes a man can cry, even a vet that is over 65! I wore out my VHS and will have to buy a DVD for this and my other super favorite "Howard the Duck" that also needs a DVD copy.

Movie Review: Humanity Test
Summary: 5 Stars

If this great film doesn't spark some semblance of emotion in you, check your pulse. You MUST be dead, because Robert Donat is completely, thoroughly disarming. What a masterful performance, and at such a young age. And Greer Garson . . . what can I say? A temple to loveliness. What an incredible woman. This film is probably the best argument for watching older b&w classics. But for more excellent Robert check out his 'Count of Monte Cristo.' If you are impressed by Greer Garson, and by the way you're insane to be not, then be sure and check out 'Mrs. Miniver.'
