Movie Reviews of Goodbye, Mr. ChipsMovie Review: A real beauty Summary: 5 Stars
Mr. Chipping (Robert Donat) comes to a boys school in England as its Latin master; he is unfriendly and distant and not a big hit with the boys. After many years he goes to Switzerland and Vienna on holiday and meets Greer Garson, whom he marries, and who shows him how to be more likable with the boys. Garson dies in childbirth and for the next umpteen years Chips lives for his boys, now everyone's favorite.
Donat is excellent as the old schoolmaster, and although it comes close at times, the picture never becomes syrupy. Even when WW I breaks out and the boys become fodder on Flander's Field the expected lamentations from Chips and others are restrained. This only adds to the movie's emotional power. It's a very warm and nostalgic piece of movie making: a feel-good movie from 1939. Definitely worth a watch.
Donat took the Academy Award - quite a feat for the year, a year full of monumental Hollywood gems.
Movie Review: A great classic Summary: 5 Stars
Almost two hours that go unnoticed.
A film on education as it used to be in the good old times, at least in good old England. "Robert Donat portrays a stiff, unpopular schoolmaster converted by love into an inspirational molder of lives." Mr. Chipps, an old-fashioned man, represents tradition; he wins the respect of his students but misses their affection, just as in his private life. This failure will be solved by the appearance of Greer Garson, just the right woman for him. She will be the inspiration that he needed. Greer Garson does here a magnificent part. She fits Mr. Chips' personality so well that her absence from the film so many minutes really makes one miss her. It would seem pretty difficult to find an actress who could match Chips' shy role without overshadowing his.
A film that'll hit your heart and will lie in your memory for ever.
Movie Review: Robert Donat is believable Summary: 5 Stars
This is the story of the 60 plus year life of a school teacher, Mr. Chipping (Robert Donat), from neophyte teacher to hopefully Head Master. On his way he will make several mistakes and learn from them. The movie has the feel of several stories running in series that all tie in to Chipping's life. He is also destined to meet the love of his life Katherine (Greer Garson) and see that the Danube is blue.
I do not want to go into a detail as that is the fun in watching eh stories unfold however I think it is significant when Chipping and Katherine are alone on the top of the world and time stops finding them selves in eternity. He also gets an insight or different slant of his carrier.
Goodbye, Mr. Chips
Movie Review: Masterpiece in every sense of the word Summary: 5 Stars
To be honest, I do not know the players in this piece.
All I can be sure of, is that over the years, I have watched every time that this 1939 classic has aired, and I can get to a TV to watch it. It has never failed to move me, and has brilliance written on it from start to finish.
I am glad that it is now on DVD, and this is one I will definitely buy as soon as I can.
I cannot recommend this film highly enough. Be careful that you do not get fooled by the 2003 remake. The one and only CLASSIC, in all senses, is this 1939 Masterpiece. The 2003 version may very well be good, but it has yet to earn the title "Masterpiece".
Any human with Love in their heart cannot but be moved by the performances in this brilliant film. Worthy of a place in any film buff's collection.
Movie Review: Robert Donat Was Truly One of the Great Actors Summary: 5 Stars
One viewing of "Goodbye Mr. Chips" should convince anyone that Robert Donat was a supremely talented thespian. In his day (late 1920s-mid 1930s) Donat was hailed as marvelous stage actor. If not for chronic asthma and emphyzema which plagued him throughout his life, Donat might have surpassed the likes of Laughton and Olivier. He is equally as wonderful in "The Citadel," "The Magic Box," "The Thirty-Nine Steps," and "The Count of Monte Christo." He had style, charm and presence. Watch how Mr. Chips ages over a sixty year span in "Goodbye Mr. Chips"---incredible. It is a great, heartwarming film and a showcase of acting acumen. I highly recommend it to classic film fans of all ages.
