Movie Reviews of Goodbye, Mr. ChipsMovie Review: The definitive version of James Hilton's novel Summary: 5 Stars
It's about time this version hit DVD. Every other film edition has been out for years. Not only is Petula Clark fantastic in this film, but the soundtrack is amazing. She's always getting kudos for Finian's Rainbow. Wait 'till you see Goodbye Mr. Chips. Although she was very big in the 'sixties, in my view Pet Clark is a very underrated talent. She had the best voice on radio, and as a stylist, easily handled numerous well-written pop songs of the day. Before making it in England and America, however, she was also well known in France, and therefore, a wealth of French recordings also exist.
I often wonder why she didn't make more movies, and seeing her stellar performance in this one, any listener may feel the same. Hats off to Pet, and this long overdue but well worth the wait curtain call.
Movie Review: A Forgotten Gem of a Musical Summary: 5 Stars
Though not as well know as "The Sound of Music" or "Oliver", "Goodbye Mr. Chips" with Peter O'Toole and Petula Clark is both a wonderful musical and a great love story. The heart warming story of the very proper English gentleman school teacher and the younger musical star of the London stage is the perfect opposites attract love story. The formal English boarding school life trying to hold on to the pride and honor of the past in an ever changing world is contrasted to the gay nightlife of the London theatre crowd to provide a great backdrop to the love story. The beautiful score and Petula Clark's wonderful voice make this a truly enjoyable experience. Goodbye, Mr. Chips
Movie Review: Goodbye Mr. Chips Is a Treasure. . .a Classic Summary: 5 Stars
My wife and I first saw Peter O'Toole in "Chips" w-a-y back when. We loved it then, and we love it now. We're an elderly couple, and we have little use for today's "special effects" films. Invariably, they lack even a semblance of a plot. Whatever happened to capable screenwriters?
Amazon's price for the disc was a bargain, and the speed with which it arrived amazed us.
So, we're very pleased, and we appreciate Amazon--a wonderful resource.
Sincerely,
Paul and Pat Schneiter
Movie Review: Absolutely good for the soul Summary: 5 Stars
The best line in the movie is spoken by Petula Clark, "On his knees, is he? And so he should be, to my husband." A gentler time on the edge of changing events, this movie captures honor and dignity, love and fidelity like no other. The youthfulness of school boy pranks, awed by the real example of genuine love played out between Clark and O'Toole against the backdrop as Englands struggles with war and Hitler. Bring tissues and someone to share them with.
Movie Review: Goodbye, Mr. Chips Summary: 5 Stars
Goodbye, Mr. Chips I first saw this picture when it first came out. I loved it then and I love it now. I just wish it didn't take so long to get to a DVD format. The movie is just as fresh and enjoyable as it was in 1968. The music memorable. I would recommend it for all who has romance in their hearts.
