Movie Reviews of Goodbye, Mr. Chips

Movie Review: In the Morning of My Life, I Will Look to the Sunrise . . .
Summary: 5 Stars

"In the morning of my life, I will look to the sunrise . . ." so begins my favorite song from "Goodbye, Mr. Chips." It has been a long time since this wonderful movie was first released to enchant the many people who saw it; and I, for one, have remained enchanted. Then a VHS version came out, and I was able to have a copy of my own.
But time passed, and technologies changed, and "Goodbye, Mr. Chips" was, once again, no longer available. After waiting many, many years for it to be released, I thought the movie was lost for good.
But, sometimes, lovely things do happen. And the decision to release this touching movie on DVD is one of them. I am so glad a new generation of people will have the pleasure of meeting, and enjoying the story of, Mr. Chips, his lovely wife, and those students with "their shining morning faces."
The story centers around a dedicated, but dry, boys' school Latin scholar who finds himself transformed by the love of a woman from a "different world." Together, their love and devotion make both better people, and isn't that what love should do?
Watch for all the moral lessons woven into the movie. Watch how they treat each other, even when they disagree.
I can still see Mr. Chips standing in the snow as "another new class" of students passes by, tipping their hats and saying, "Good morning, Sir." Yes, it makes you think there will always be an England.
Well, I tip my hat to the wise and wonderful individuals who saved this movie and put it out on DVD. May you live to be a thousand years old. Now, if you could get "Dear Heart" released, there is hope for the world.
If you haven't seen this movie, please give it a chance. If it touches you, as it has so many here, you will be much the better for it.

Movie Review: IT IS IN WIDESCREEN WITH 5.1 SURROUND SOUND!!!!!
Summary: 5 Stars

My thanks to D. Launderville for his recent review advising that this DVD is widescreen. No website, including the official website for Warner Bros home video, had any information regarding the aspect ratio for this release. Upon reading his advisory that the release was indeed a widescreen print with 5.1 surround sound audio I promptly placed my order with Amazon and upgraded to 1-day delivery.
As someone who always catches this film (as I'm sure many others who are reading this do) on a certain classic film channel known for presenting films in their original aspect ratio whenever possible, the idea that this film's glorious 2:20/2:35 print could be cropped down to a miserable pan-and-scan is unconscionable!!!

I hope that other fans of this film that shared my concern have read D. Launderville's review and have placed their orders for this wonderful film. If they have not, I hope that they will see this review.

Why no website provided this information continues to bewilder me.

I loved everyone's performance in this film, however, I feel compelled to single out the fabulous Sian Phillips as the divine Ursula Mossbank. She had less than 10 minutes of screen time in this film but she stole every scene she appeared in. I like to describe her performance as "Auntie Mame on Absinthe".

Movie Review: Hello, Mr Chips!
Summary: 5 Stars

I have seen this version of Goodbye Mr Chips a couple of times in my youth and again last year, when it was broadcast on television again (a rarity in the UK).

My interest was sparked again when Film Score Monthly released the extensive three CD set of the songs and score, with the marvellous work of Leslie Bricusse and John Williams and the great singers (yes, even O'Toole).

This DVD of the roadshow print is long overdue and is just fabulous. It is very emotional, very polished and the performances are great and the love between the characters of Arthur Chipping and Katherine Bridges is so realistic - kudos to both the handsome O'Toole and the gorgeous Petula Clark.

It is unfathomable why this film has never been highly thought of and that people have been less than kind to Leslie Bricusse's lovely music, aided and abetted by the glittering arrangements and orchestrations of a pre-Star Wars John Williams.

It is a great pity the DVD doesn't have any real extras, besides trailers for this version and the 1930s version of the story. Maybe someone will see fit to re-release the DVD with many bonus features we know they exist.

Movie Review: Mellowing With Age
Summary: 5 Stars

I had not seen Goodbye Mr. Chips with Peter O'Toole and Petula Clark since it hit the theatres in 1969. By chance, I happened upon the DVD sale in Amazon and--with a little trepidation--decided to buy it. Trepidation, because I know how things that once seemed grand and beautiful when you were young, are often cast in a much harsher light through the prism of age. The converse of that, of course, is that age often deepens, allowing a broader and more rewarding experience. So it was with me. I appreciated and loved the movie more after a lapse of 31 years then I did when I watched as an "enlightened" twenty-something in a darkened theatre. Mr. O'Toole's recessitive was masterful and Ms. Clark's voice, sublime. As for the musical score, it would stand up to any current musical (or past, for that matter) and John Williams was as genius then as he is now. The DVD restoration is well worth the investment. What a lot of flowers!

Movie Review: Where's the DVD?
Summary: 5 Stars

The Herb Ross GOODBYE,MR.CHIPS is one of my all time favorite films. I saw it first as the Christmas show at the Empire Theater, London in 1969, and have seen it over and over again, first in a barely watchable pan and scan VHS version, and then on a somewhat better widescreen laserdisc. But where is the long promised DVD release? With all the garbage that does make it to DVD, I am at a loss to know why a film as well made and touching as this has not yet been released. Maybe Peter O'Toole's Academy Award nomination for VENUS will make someone at Warner Home Video, (who I believe release older MGM films), sit up and take notice and get the CHIPS DVD into the works. With terrific performances by O'Toole, Petula Clark, Michael Redgrave and the amazing Sian Phillips along with fine songs by Leslie Bricusse and seamless direction by Herb Ross, one can only hope.
