Movie Reviews of GoodFellas [Blu-ray]Movie Review: Good Blu-Ray Transfer Summary: 5 Stars
Goodfellas has long been one of my favorite movies. I've watched it many times since I saw it in the theater. I've seen it on tape, on laserdisc, on the original "flipper" DVD and the remastered anamorphic DVD, and now, Blu-Ray Disc.
I'm happy to report that the Blu-Ray is a significant improvement over the remastered DVD. The picture is brighter, the colors are more vivid, and many scenes have much more detail and clarity. Of course, the overall picture is much sharper.
Goodfellas is not the kind of movie that is a showcase for high-resolution video, however. It has a lot of dark indoor scenes; very little takes place outdoors (something I never noticed before). I noticed some graininess, which has a lot to do with how Scorcese shot the picture. It's just more noticeable in the higher resolution.
There are some minor problems with the audio in one scene. The dialogue drops in volume and then jumps back up in the following scene. Other than that, the audio is fine, although I would have liked a more aggressive surround mix, at least in the musical selections. However, there's not much use of the surrounds here.
Also, at one point there's a vertical line halfway across the screen. Why this wasn't cleaned up is mystery to me; it lasts for about fifteen seconds. Admittedly this is a very minor problem, but with expensive new technology flaws of this kind stand out more than they would on tape or standard DVD.
If you're a fan of the movie and are considering upgrading to the Blu-Ray, I'd highly recommend it. It's not an eye-popping effects movie to begin with, so this disc isn't the first one to reach for if you want to show off your system. But it's probably the best way to watch the movie.
Movie Review: A Great Scorsese Film Summary: 5 Stars
If you enjoy films about the mafia, you can't miss with Goodfellas. The narration by Ray Liotta (and briefly Lorraine Bracco,) allows the viewer to imagine themself in the character's situation by making it seem a bit more personal and easier to relate to. The cast is phenomenal. Robert De Niro is arguably a top 5 actor of all time and the role of Jimmy "The Gent" Conway couldn't have been more well done. The highlight of Ray Liotta's career was his role as Henry Hill, a young man who seemed destined to be part of the mob from an early age. Lorraine Bracco plays the wife of Henry Hill, (Karen), who finds herself in a dangerous relationship that she becomes content with. Not everyone is a Joe Pesci fan, but whenever paired in a film with De Niro, Pesci always delivers. Some of the greatest movie quotes are produced from this one, including many from Pesci. Samuel L. Jackson has a small roll, along with many others you may recognize from the popular HBO Series: The Sopranos.
Even if mafia movies are not your genre, Goodfellas is definately worth a watch. After viewing one time, most will find its worth the purchase. Being based on a true story makes it all the more compelling. Martin Scorsese delivered maybe the best film made in the 90's with this one.
Movie Review: Goodfellas with top quality picture and sound. Summary: 5 Stars
Theres not much to review here, Goodfellas is in my opinion anyways one of the best films ever directed and produced, the chemistry between Ray Liotta, Robert Dinero and Joe Pesci is amazing and they pull off an amazing storyline. I obviously would recommend this film to anybody whose into the Gangster action films and hasnt seen the movie. I love the fact its on Blu Ray now, The moment I saw it on the shelf i picked it up and bought it. the sound and picture quality is top notch and does wonders for this film regardless of its the graphics of the whole movie, the fight scenes that take place, the drug scenes or the shooting scenes all look great, crystal clear. I Highly recommened this movie and buying it on blu ray, you wont be dissapointed. Enjoy hope this helped.
Movie Review: In My Top 3! Summary: 5 Stars
I haven't been "into" films for too long now, just a couple of years. But ever since I started watching Scorsese films they have been my favorite. If I had to pick a film that I though was better than Goodfellas the only thing I would be able to say is The Aviator, another Scorsese picture. I can't possible tell you what this film does while I'm watching it. You get so drawn into the world you feel like you are know more about gangs than anyone. It's such a fun movie with great replay value, especially in blu-ray. The picture looks awesome (for a 1990 film) and it adds so much to the movie. Highly Recommended!
Movie Review: Must buy title. Summary: 5 Stars
An amazing film that breaks all the rules in the boook. Engaging story, memorable characters, and many great lines. A brief summary of this would be the tale of Henry Hill, notorious gangster from his rise, to his downfall. The PQ is astounding from facial blemishes, to the smallest details, very imprssive. The audio is good I don't have surround sound but I had no troubles. The supplements are good with commentary, some alright featurettes, and a History channel type one hour show with related material. This is a must buy title, and a great addition to anyones bluray collection.
