Movie Reviews of Gone Baby GoneMovie Review: When is the right thing the wrong thing? Summary: 5 Stars
The story opens in a run-down section of Boston, where a 4-year old girl has been kidnapped. The police captain (Morgan Freeman) isn't having any luck with the investigation, so the child's aunt hires two private detectives (Casey Affleck and Michelle Monaghan) to help. Their work takes them into a cruel world where life is very cheap.
This movie really surprised me. First off, it was a tense and scary detective story, but then it became a story about Right and Wrong, leaving the audience to judge the actions and the characters. While it's full of violence, depravity, and bad language, it is a memorable story that deserves to be discussed. The actors are uniformly superb, especially Morgan Freeman in a very sympathetic role. Casey Affleck is excellent as the detective with street cred despite his baby face, and Ed Harris does his usual great job playing a police officer. Boston native Ben Affleck directed the movie on location, giving a sleazy, but apparently accurate look at life in the area.
The moral dilemma posed at the end is not easily answered. I know I was left shaken and sobbing, so sorry for the situation and wondering what I would do. Highly recommended.
Movie Review: Film Noir Is Alive and Well Summary: 5 Stars
Initially I stayed away from this film because of the subject matter. A child's disappearance is not a pleasant subject even when it is a backdrop for a great detective thriller. I am sorry I was reluctant. This film is one of the best films made in the last year. Ben Affleck directs a film every bit as masterful as Sean Penn's MYSTIC RIVER. The story takes place in a small community in Massachusetts. Ben's brother, Casey plays the role of a young private detective, Patrick Kenzie, who is asked by the aunt of a child, gone missing, to aid the police in the search of her three year old niece. Kenzie's partner, Angela Gennaro, is ably portrayed by actress Michelle Monaghan. The search for the child is pretty straight forward; however, by the end of the film it becomes obvious that nothing is as it appears. Like the film CHINATOWN of some years ago this story has a lot going on under the surface. There are some tough moral dilemmas faced by the detective couple the resolution of which will give the viewer a lot to ponder. Ed Harris and Morgan Freeman, two of America's finest actors add substance to the story. Don't miss this film!
Movie Review: Taking Casey Affleck Seriously Summary: 5 Stars
I enjoyed this movie as far as entertainment. I do realize that it is based on a book. My husband who was born in Ireland left this area of Boston because he wanted to get away from the Irish American element of the area. the Irish American attitude is to drink round the clock, eat corned beef and cabbage on St Patrick's Day and dye their hair green. This makes him ashamed and he wanted to separate himself of this stereotype. Irish American s have no idea of what being Irish is all about and most have never seen the sky over Ireland and never will. The Irish American women he met before he married me (A New York Italian American)would drink him under the table and used language as foul as it gets.
Our feeling about Casy Affleck playing the role that he did is that it was the wrong role for him. Who knows? Maybe Ben said "I can't pay you but, this hopefully will add to your Resume". We had a hard time taking Casey seriously. He is a stickman at probably 5'10" and weighing in at about 148 lbs. Thank God he had a gun permit and was carrying in the bar scene or he would have been crushed- snapped in two pieces like a twig.
Movie Review: I was surprised at how good this film was Summary: 5 Stars
The only thing I'd known about this film before I first watched it was that there was a Lisbeth Scott song I loved in the film ("In the Darkness"), and that was the soundtrack CD I'd downloaded the song from. And I remembered that Amy Ryan had been nominated for an Oscar for her part, and the clip they showed on Oscar night made the film look interesting. But I saw it a month ago on cable, and two nights ago I watched it again and it was even better than the first time.
Amy Ryan is wonderful in the part of a hardscrabble mother whose child has gone missing, and Amy Madigan, who (like Ryan) doesn't seem to have enough screen time, is a standout as the aunt who will not leave the search for the child in the hands of the police, but hires a somewhat seedy neighborhood guy (Casey Affleck) who knows people who would never go to the cops, to augment the investigation. Ben Affleck did a wonderful job of directing a great cast. Morgan Freeman also stars in this film and I'd pretty much watch him in anything, but this film is honest and surprisingly affecting.
Movie Review: Very Good Adaptation of a Great Book Summary: 5 Stars
Being a huge fan of Dennis Lehane and his Kenzie/Gennaro novels, I was anxious to see the movie adaptation of Gone Baby Gone. I can't really separate the book and the movie, therefore I do take a bit away from the movie in comparison to the book.
First, the good. I liked Casey Affleck and Michelle Monaghan as Patrick and Angie. Although I pictured them to be a bit older, I thought the actors did a fine job. The direction by Ben Affleck is wonderful. The movie did a very good job in following the book, although it was like reading a Cliff's Notes version.
I only have two complaints. First, Angie's character is almost non-existent. She's a major player in the book, and much more than just Patrick's girlfriend. Second, I was really hoping to see more of the unstable Bubba Rogowski. He's another major character in the novel and the other novels as well.
My complaints aside, this is a terrific movie. Exciting, gritty, and heart-breaking. I highly recommend this film.
