Movie Review: A Gilded bore of a film!
Summary: 2 Stars

My great-grandparents came from Sicily to Ellis Island in 1907.Their crossing and treatment was not in the least like anything described in this film "The Golden Door". I am not saying that what is shown in this movie is not accurate for some, but it definitely was not accurate for all. In fact, my great-grandmother was legally blind and was allowed in-no questions asked.My great-grandfather had one lung and a respiratory condition.They were into New York City in two days! Also, the Sicilian family in this film comes off as a rather misguided, unaware and almost dimwitted people full of silly old world ways controlled by religious superstition, not knowing what to expect at all in America. Again, that was not true in the least of my family.My great-grandparents would have been totally offended at the depiction of Mr.Crialese's Mancuso family.Apart from all of that,this was just a strident and terribly tedious piece of work that tries not to be documentarian, but succeeds at being rather artsy and long.The annoyingly silly use of symbolism hits one over the head with a "now do you get it" thud!!!Crialese tries to be clever with his use of odd imagery, but after a while that too gets really irksome (especially the giant carrot and the milk swimming .)This film will more than likely have great appeal to those Americans whose families did not arrive as steerage cattle, but rather wealthy Europeans. They will more than likely be appalled and think "how quaint,yet how terrible." As for me, this was an exhausting piece of trite film making trying to be way more than what it was......boring.....very,very,very boring!

Movie Review: Customers Beware - Terrible Movie!

I had great hopes for this movie, but after watching it I cannot comprehend the positive reviews, unless they come from family members of the cast and director. I would have stopped the movie 1/2 way through and thrown it away had I not already spent the $[...] bucks to purchase it.

If you expected sweeping views of the lands of your ancestors in Sicily and similar views of Ellis Island, you will be extremely disappointed as I was. All the shots are basically close ups of the characters, with maybe two or three different room scenes supposedly inside Ellis Island. Looking forward to any positive upturns in the movie, I hoped to see the view that my ancestors saw as Ellis Island first appeared to them. Sorry, no such luck - how about nothing but white fog??? Was this whole movie shot in a warehouse in Burbank?

And if you didn't read all the product details of this Walt Disney Studio movie (like me) before you bought it, this movie is in Italian with English subtitles! I could have lived with that if not for the fact that the first 3/4 of the movie, consists mainly of 3-word sentences. Really makes for some interesting reading!

So, I would give the story line and scenery a ZERO score and suggest that you purchase a nice bottle of wine instead of wasting it on this movie.

Movie Review: Couldn't get it to work on our blu-ray player
Summary: 1 Stars

This is not a review about the movie. The issue is that for some reason the first DVD disc sent wouldn't play properly on our blu-ray player, so we sent it back for a replacement. The replacement failed in the same chapter locations as the first. So we sent that one back. Is it possible that the batch is defective? I can't say. Other than the fact that we originally watched the movie as a rental on the same player without problems, I'm leaning toward that possibility. I understand the policy concerning opened DVDs is a sensitive subject. I understand and support that policy. However, in a case when two of the same DVDs fail, I would hope a return and request for money back would be honored.

Movie Review: sad brave story

i sat down to enjoy a movie about my ancestors and i am sorry to say it was so dark i could barely see it at times .artsy maybe yes pretentious ? i had hoped for more i was ready for it and the movie never delivered except for the fact that Italy was dark and dingy and the boat was dark and the people everything was so dark i feel i missed one third the movie.....but the scenes at ellis island were tagic i appreciate my grandparents too late to share this with them...if only the movie could be seen be all to feel the bravery the desparation the humiliation they all had to endure to be Americans
