Movie Reviews of Godzilla Vs. Megaguirus: The G Annihilation Strategy

Movie Review: Best of the new Gojira films.
Summary: 5 Stars

Gojira (Godzilla) has a long film history, stretching back almost 50 years now. In that time he's been everything from the star of campy kiddie movies to a dark manifestation of anger and hatred.

The original concept of Gojira was that he was a representative of the forces of nature, neither truly good nor truly evil; he was like a living tsunami, earthquake, hurricane, volcano (all forces that Japan is intimately familiar with) rolled into one. The monsters he fights are often representatives of other forces -- technology (Mechagojira, Mogera), man's tampering with forces of nature (Biollante, King Ghidora), and forces from Elsewhere (Space Gojira, the original Ghidora, Megagiras).

Megagiras presents us with some of the best of the new approaches. We have a new and interesting opponent (Megagiras reminds me in approach of Legion from Gamera 2; first it comes in swarms, then it becomes something really BIG). We have human involvement (and reasons for why Gojira bothers to come to Japan so often). We have an AMAZINGLY cool new soundtrack (the new Gojira theme is the first worthy successor to Ikufube's original). We have the effective new design for Gojira; and we have what may be the absolute coolest and impressive new superweapon ever shown on screen, the Dimensional Tide Cannon.

Like most Gojira movies, the plot is fairly straightforward, running on two separate tracks: first is the attempt by human beings to create a weapon which can destroy Gojira so he won't be a menace to us any more, and second is the emergence of the threat of Megagiras -- which was started by an unexpected side-effect of the new weapon under development.

The main female lead is very cool, driven by a prior encounter with Gojira-sama; she's the main action hero, while the primary male lead is the lab geek trying to win her favor. She's pretty, tough, and competent, and fun to watch in action. The combat scenes are very well done, and how Gojira deals with an opponent who appears to completely outclass him through speed is just plain fun.

The special effects are very good for a modern Goji film, with the Dimensional Tide deserving its own special mention.

If you're a fan of monster movies, and Gojira in particular, get this one.

Movie Review: Coolest Godzilla I've ever seen (and only....shhh)
Summary: 5 Stars

OK. I rented this, along with the original, cause that was all that was in the Video Store, with some of my friends. We put in Godzilla 1954, and, it sucked. I don't wanna make this a review of the original, but it's way long and kinda dull, and the American version is even worse.
But, that might have been cause of it being black and white and Godzilla's Nuclear Breath ray thingymajig was smoke and he ice breath too.
Anyhoo.
Then we stuck in G VS Megaguirus, and from scene one, where Godzilla rampages through Osaka, or some other town like that, we were hooked.
The acting was good, as far as we can tell, although Japanese actors like to talk tloudly in films (go figure). Dialogue is pretty cheesy sometimes, and sometimes downright stupid (i.e. child running past child going 'I collect many insects' for no reason), but it doesn't deter from the story.
The story being- Godzilla's attracted to energy sources, nuclear plasma etc... So Japan, and especially Tokyo, have stopped using power sources that Godzilla's attracted to. And, as a contingency plan, they develop and awesome weapon that fires a mini-black hole and sucks everything into it until it dissipates (Which is a V. Good thing). But, after test firing it, a dragonfly mutates into a giant prehistoric insect, that soon creates more of its kind, eventually forming the giant flying Megaguirus, which, naturally, battles Godzilla in a magnificent battle royale.
The Special FX were great, for this kind of movie. The suit on Godzilla looks cool as, and Megaguirus is pretty cool to.
However, Megaguirus's movements are the worst effects there are. I never believed that a film made this recently would be unable to digitally remove wires, it's quite remarkable, but it got me and my friends some good laughs.
Animationy effects, like Godzilla's laser breath thingymajig are pretty good, but sometimes it falters with the swarm of smaller, but still quite large insects.

Godzilla VS Megaguirus is an awesome movie. It's fun to watch, it's a hoot.

Get it...

Movie Review: Still Mean, Still Green
Summary: 5 Stars

As it would be, I have returned to my youth, and found new excitement in some of my old fav's. One of them being the line of Godzilla movies that I was basically raised on (Star Trek, Speed Racer & Batman, being the other). Really, my youth was good.
However, my youth aside, I've always loved GODZILLA, no matter who he was laying the smackdown on. And if you enjoy the old Rubber suits banging away at everything that threatens Good ol' mother earth & humanity, then you'll love G vs Megaguirus. I do. and what's more, if you are a true G fan, or G-Force, G-Watch, or G-Whatever at heart, then you'll lament for the Old Big Green Guys (both B&W, and the 90's ver) and offer praise up to Junior.
If I have it right, this Godzilla is none other than Minya, or Godzilla jr., all grown up! Look at the spines - they are purple trimmed as opposed to Daddy's white trim, and his fire is gold, sometimes neon red or green, as opposed to Daddy G's blue or green.
That's right G-fans, today's Godzilla is GODZILLA Jr. And if you watch this video you won't be disappointed with either the quality or the story. Both were done with excellence with little human error on behalf of the monsters (some of the wires weren't removed in editing, but hey they are worth a laugh when you see them. And they happen to be seen during a fight seen which takes your attention away from them anyway). I found my family and myself cheering on Jr. as he relentlessy beat the stuffing out of MegaG with style and finese. Sometimes he reverted to his fathers way of banging, but the little guy has a mind of his own, and uses it well.
I'm not going to spoil this movie by saying any more. Except watch & enjoy. And oh yeah, Amazon.com delivered on their promise of quality & satisfaction. Now I just have to purchase some more Godzilla to complete the collection. Gammera too.

Movie Review: Godzilla vs. Megaguirus on DVD
Summary: 5 Stars

Godzilla vs. Megaguirus (aka Godzilla x Megaguirus) is a spectacular film in its own right. As a homage to the classic showa (1954-1975) Godzilla films, "GxM", as its known in the kaiju fandom, excells in almost every respect. The action-packed plot and pacing coupled with great special effects (most of the time) and believable actors makes for a great godzilla film for the 20th century. As an obsessive Godzilla enthusiast, I enjoyed the film a great deal, and recommend it to all kaiju fans.

Movie Rating: 9 out of 10

As for the DVD itself, the picture quality is astonishing. The widescreen video is sharp and clean. Perfect! The 5.1 dobly digital sound is astoundingly pounding and equally perfect. 28 chapter stops are included as well. But the addition of the original Japanese audio track is what really shines in this release. Unfortunately, the english subtitles for the track are not subtitles at all, but rather "dubtitles" taken almost directly from the dubbed english track of the film. This means that the subtitles are not always completely faithful to the original script. But this doesn't pose too much of a problem as the dub is faithful enough as it is. The only other extras on the DVD are trailers for other Sony DVD releases.

DVD rating: 9 out of 10 (one point deducted for dubtitles)

Movie Review: A Fun Movie!
Summary: 5 Stars

After years of waiting, the film "Godzilla vs. Megaguirus" is finally released! And, it is on DVD! Not only it is English Dubbed, but they actually have the Japanese track! That's a first! This movie was fun, fun FUN! In my opinion, it's much better than GMK: Giant Monsters All-Out attack! In 1954, Godzilla raided Japan. Then he did it again in 1966 and 1996. Now we enter 2001 were the G-graspers are building a new weapon called the Dimension Tide! The test was successful, but it creates a portal were Megaguirus lays her egg. It hatches a Meganuron, transform into Meganula, and, after battling with Godzilla, the swarms gave energy, and Megaguirus is born and faces Godzilla! After a huge battle, Godzilla defeats Megaguirus, but the G-graspers fire the Dimension Tide. They think they won, but... well, you have to see the ending after the credits! This film is really the greatest Godzilla movie since Godzilla (1954) and it really packs a PUNCH! Godzilla was showing his showa-style moves, including the BODY SLAM! The audio and picture was nice, but I wish they put more extras. It creeps me out when Megaguirus smiles, but that's just me. The final battle was Godzilla's best yet, and it's unforgetable! Some may not like this movie, but if your a fan, get this movie! Nice work Godzilla!!!
