Movie Reviews of GodspellMovie Review: Dated, but very enjoyable Summary: 5 StarsWith a few notable exceptions, good musicals seem to be a thing of the past. Godspell, though obviously dated, offers an enjoyable musical look at the Gospel of Jesus Christ set in modern setting (well, 1970's modern anyway.) It is fun to watch, has a great message, and the musical numbers are well done and choreographed well. Having grown up in that era, many songs were very familiar.
My only complaint is that like so many other Hollywood-made tellings of the Gospel of Jesus Christ, it falls short of really conveying the important Biblical message of Salvation by grace through faith.
Highly recommended!
Movie Review: Fun for all ages Summary: 5 StarsGodspell is one of those shows that has been around for years on virtually every stage imaginable. From Broadway to Off-Broadway to colleges to almost any high school production, it is shown. I vaguely remembered the movie although I remember coming across an old record in my dad's collection of vinyal this soundtrack in it's entirity. I remember vividly picture of the dance routine on top of the World Trade Center during its final moments of construction. Seems odd now to know that the actors who were on top of that same building never knew that in about 20-some years it would have been destroyed.
Everything about this film is a treasure. I've forgotten the hippie-like attire and a bunch of actors running through the city of New York doing song and dance numbers. It's amazing how this film was made that during their sequences there was no visible activity at all until the very end when they brought Victor Gerber's body around the corner. I'd love to see the production notes and even hear the director's commentary (if it is available somewhere) how they managed to pull everything off in the "city that never sleeps" while acting like a bunch of crazed loons. From beginning to end,....you'll be swept away in the parables. It's not pushing Christianity or religion down a person's throat,....just relaying a few simple messages about life while having fun in the process. Godspell, as well as Jesus Christ Superstar, are both musical jems that I consider a must for a person's collection.
Movie Review: if you like the musical, don't get this movie! Summary: 1 Starsi've been in "Godspell" 3 times and LOOOOOVE it, the musical, i mean. if i were Victor Garber i would take this movie off of my resume. it is just NOT good!! the singing and acting is just not good and give the name "Godspell" a bad wrap. Please, if you are giong to be in the musical, have been in the musical, or may be ever, and you choose to watch the movie please look at it as simply a joke. if you do the musical and the director teel s you to do anything like what the movie does...QUIT...FAST. you don't want to be seen like they are. overall, the movie is not good, but please don't base your judgement of the musical on it.
Movie Review: Godspell DVD Summary: 3 StarsIt was as expected. A good movie. In the genre of Jesus Christ Superstar and Hair. A decent, although not the best, telling of the Gospel of Jesus Christ. The songs are great and you do get caught up in it. The ending with them disappearing around a corner and the normal world resuming is particularily haunting.
Movie Review: Godspell - a blast from the 70's Summary: 4 StarsThis film is a great example of not only musical theater of the late 60's and early 70's, but the culture at-large. It is an intriguing film experience that started life as a masters thesis project and took on a life of its own. 'Godspell' is an old english version of the word 'gospel' which means good news. This story is a musical version of Jesus' short minstry with his disciples. It is filmed on the abandoned streets and building roofs of New York City and the dialogue serves the purpose of setting up each song - of which there are many. This film was controversial when it was first released (about the same time as Jesus Christ Superstar) because some thought is was sacreligious. I tend to see it as a fun way to communicate important ideas in the context of tunes that will remind you of the overall message.
I enjoy it each time I watch it.
