Movie Review: A Beautiful Story
Summary: 5 Stars
I saw this movie on the big screen when I was a boy and its probably the main reason I have such strong faith today while the rest of my family has virtually none. It's a beautiful story told in an upbeat and clever way. When everyone "disappears" from the streets of NYC its almost sci-fi, and the scenes of the cast filmed on top of the WTC will bring tears as much as the story itself. The songs will stay with you for years and always be a reminder of the Gospel of St. Matthew. My kids even love it. They want to watch it every day since I got it! For me, the very best part of the movie is the final scene with the song "Prepare Ye The Way" and then the uptempo version of "Day By Day" with the exciting chorus and magnificent guitar and organ solos. I loved the transition of the dancers on the empty streets leading to the corner where the crowds suddenly appear in great numbers, culminating with the sounds of traffic and then the rousing chorus during the movie credits. The cast demonstrates a pure behaviour that is expected within the religious context. It's the kind of spell that enchants everybody, even a non-religious person like me.
Whatever, I never saw a play from Broadway, 'cause I live in Brazil, but I'm a great fan of the few musical based movies those I own, e.g. RENT, Hair, Moulin Rouge, Chicago, ... and every thing related with beautiful USA culture. There's NY on it, therefore I love it.

Back in the early 1970's,I was a Godspell groupie!I saw it performed on stage in Boston and New York more times than I can count. When the movie came out,We all went wild. The music and the cast(most original Broadway players)were great. Watching it today,it still makes me feel so good,brings back many happy memories and gives me hope for a better day. I put this movie in my DVD player fully intending to have it play in the background while I cleaned house, but I soon found myself drawn into the story and the songs. Victor Garber is absolutely enchanting and the songs are wonderful (although the choreography is a bit on the cheesy side). I disagree that the film needs to be updated, I think the story is timeless and most people could stand to take a lesson or two from it.
