Movie Reviews of GodspellMovie Review: Don't be fooled Summary: 5 Stars
It isn't about Jesus, it's about the community that he creates between ordinary people. It fuses the gospel of Matthew's parables and some of Stephen Schwartz's best music.Victor Garber is a musical idol. His voice is impeccable, one of the best in contemporary musicals. The songs are legendary, i.e. the pop hit Day By Day, clearly the shows most popular number. Haunting melodies on songs such as On The Willows and By My Side give the show real emotion. Songs like All For The Best and Save The People give the show some reall jazz and pizazz, pepping it up and bringing it life, not just boring you like some Sunday church service. It's a great show, very colorful and energetic. It teaches you a lesson, but it doesn't tell you you have to listen or you'll go to hell. It's an entertaining passion play with some excellent no name talent; some times they're the best. I give it my highest recommendation.
Movie Review: Always In The Shadow... Summary: 5 Stars
Unfortunately, GODSPELL has always had JESUS CHRIST SUPERSTAR as an unfair comparison, which is a shame because in many ways GODSPELL is superior. For one, GODSPELL, as it is subtitled, is based on the gospel of St. Matthew. The story follows the biblical account pretty accurately putting it in modern time, from the calling of the apostles to Christ's crucifixion. Second, for the most part, the music is uplifting. After hearing many of these songs, you'll remember them. Third, the scenery is unique, again placing the story of the Christ in modern, and somewhat familiar territory. I used to watch GODSPELL every Easter when it was shown on TV even though I would be described as a "fallen Catholic" and it always gave me a good feeling afterwards. If you've seen JCS, do yourself a favor and watch GODSPELL, if just to compare the two musical versions of Christ's ministry.
Movie Review: Great movie for aging Jesus freaks! Summary: 5 Stars
If you're over 40, and consider the term "Jesus Freak" to be a compliment you'll love this dvd. If you're under 40 you'll probably just stare at the TV and wonder, "What we're they thinking?" Godspell was my first exposure to Christianity at the age of 15 in the 1970's. Yes it's disjointed, it's weak on theology, but as a 15 year old pagan this movie touched my heart and was the beginning of an almost 30 year walk with the Lord. The musical score is excellent, and the movie is quite funny. Some reviewers have complained about the "clown Jesus"...the lack of the cross in the movie, etc. Please remember...IT'S ART FOLKS!!!! It's not the Bible and it's not meant to be a theology text. In this age of megachurches, and rich Christians with way to much political power, the simplicity of Godspell helps me to remember what's really important in my walk with God. Highly recommended!!
Movie Review: Godspell Summary: 5 Stars
Love Godspell! Did you know that the lyrics for the majority of the songs are the words of hymns out of the Anglican/Episcople hymnal? Of course, the music is different, but the words are hymns.
The story is upbeat and speaks of a universal way of living that cuts thru the differences of religious faiths and brings together a common means of living in peace with each other.
I would definitely recommend Godspell to anyone who enjoys uplifting, clean entertainment with a positive message.
The one thing that will also make this movie a collector's item is that, there is a scene where the actors are dancing on top of the twin towers and the scene ends with a wide shot of the towers.
Loved Victor Garber's performance.
Movie Review: Took me back 30 years ... Summary: 5 Stars
I first saw the play when it was done at ECU by the drama department in 1974. I loved it then and have continued to enjoy the music ever since. This winter, the same department did a reprise, 32 years later. It was just as good the second time. I enjoyed it so much I decided to check and see if it was ever made into a movie.
I was delighted to learn that it was --- found it on Amazon and decided to try it. When I sat down to watch it I was delighted to see how true it was to the original stage production. It was simple and direct --- and was almost like going to a live performance.
I highly recommend it for anyone who would like to get a feel for what the stage production was like. JGH 3/25/2006
