Movie Reviews of GodspellMovie Review: UPLIFTING FILM EXPERIENCE... Summary: 5 Stars
It has been may years since I have seen this film. Since it is now on DVD, I thought it would be a nice addition to my collection. Boy was I ever right! Victor (TITANIC) Garber is outstanding in the lead role, not to mention his awesome voice. The film is brilliantly edited by Alan "All That Jazz" Heim (assisted by the always remarkable Trudy "House of Games" Ship), adding exactly the spark that the film needs, to what is lacking in the choreography department. FOSSE IT AINT! The score by Mr. Schwartz NEVER sounded better, and his most recognizable "Day by Day" is not nearly as wonderful as, "Save the People", "All Good Gifts", and the awesome "All For The Best" (A scene which was partially shot on the top of the World Trade Center with the rest of the NY skyline as a backdrop...see the CD soundtrack cover for visual. The towers were not even completed at the time. Extremely disturbing after 9/11/01.) A must for any fan of musicals and film buffs alike!
Movie Review: A ray of sunshine on a cloudy dismal time period Summary: 5 Stars
What a controversy THIS movie caused back in the late 1960s! First, it was Elvis, then it was the Beatles, then Jesus Christ Superstar and Hair. Now, of all things, an upbeat musical with people dressed in weird costumes doing a play on the gospel of St. Matthew! How many members of the older generation must have angerly screamed "what is this country coming to?"
Well, if it meant that more people would be curious about Christianity than ever before, that I say the country moved in the right direction after all. This movie was and still is a blockbuster hit .. and it didn't lead kids down the path towards drugs and sex as so many feared.
What I liked most about it was its positive outlook and upbeatness. There was no warning of the pending apocolypse because the US had troops in Viet Nam. There was no attack on US companies for polluting the environment. There was only good music and a positive message which is something we needed very badly back then .... ... and now.
Movie Review: Nostalgic Shoes Summary: 5 Stars
I bought this movie as we were doing the play Godspell at our community theater. It was fun, though, to watch the movie again. I hadn't seen it in years. I found myself singing along. The pacing on this movie may seem a little slow by today's standards, but once the music starts, the movie picks up. There is also some cheesey camera work (this is a low budget piece) but I think the director gets away with it and the movie stays up. I've had friends tell me that The costumes are clownish and distracting, but I have to point out that the distraction is intentional to show diversity in society. The messages come through (Tabelek's message is the forming of a society, Gospel of Luke's message is that Jesus is the Savior, the movie's message is that religion can be fun). Good stuff.
This recording made me think that I was watching the film as a TV broadcast. Instead of being a hindrance, I think I rather enjoyed it. I also believe that this movie should be in almost every musical movie library.
Movie Review: Just seen it for the first time!! Summary: 5 Stars
I just saw part of this movie for the first time yesterday (Easter Sundar no less) and I think it's an incredible movie for all to see!! I saw this production at a church that a friend of mine attended a few years ago, and was excited about it then. My parents saw this movie and thought it was great!! What makes that comment notable is the fact that my father doesn't really like movies that involve the "hippie" sort of look that was common in 1973 when this movie was produced, but he enjoyed the music and the message that this movie brings.
I also think that children would enjoy the movie. It portrays the life of Jesus very well without having the harmful effects of some adults knowing that it takes place in a time in our history where some things were taboo in our culture (drugs, for example). I would recommend that any youth group or older Sunday School class be given the opportunity to view this movie. Their lives may be changed by it!!
Movie Review: All Good Gifts Summary: 5 Stars
The story of Jesus of Nazareth has been made and remade so many times over the course of time. This version provides, in my opinion, a more grass-roots approach. Based on the Gospel According to St. Matthew, Godspell takes the story and provides a fresh look at the story of Jesus and the lessons he taught and the things he experienced. The play, while simple on the surface, is rich in symbolism (the fact that Jesus wears a "Superman" shirt, that he is represented as a clown, that John the Baptist and Judas are played by the same actor, etc.) and an opinion of the film (and the play) should be formed after one has seen it more than once. Many of the original Broadway cast is represented here including a very young and vibrant Victor Garber. The music remains full of life and meaning and the tale remains poignant and meaningful even though the hippie culture which inspired the version has long since past.
