Movie Reviews of Godspell

Movie Review: Interesting observation
Summary: 5 Stars

I think it is a testament to the timelessness of this movie that in 2004 (more than 20 years after its release), there are so many reviews within the past month.

I've loved the play Godspell, probably since it was first out on Broadway. It is a gentle and accessible way to learn about Jesus and his teachings. To me, it has always been quite moving. The movie, while obviously not as interactive an experience, is a wonderful portrayal.

It's quite dated - true 70's fare. I can't think of one 70's musical that's not. Also, remember this is an interpretation of a Broadway play, and often the interpretations lose a bit of something in turning them into a movie. (I'd say the same about Pippen, Hair, Jesus Christ Superstar, even Oklahoma!, etc...)

This is not for someone who is expecting "The Passion of Christ". I don't believe it was ever meant to be. But if it makes one person connect with the messages more closely, does it have to be serious and realistic?

I recommend this movie for those with an open mind who are wanting an uplifting musical.

Have fun.

Movie Review: BUY THIS MOVE+ONE FOR A FRIEND!
Summary: 5 Stars

Godspell is something like a deceptively whimsical "Sesame Street" style synopsis and presentation of the very real, hard hitting, teachings and ministry of Our Lord Jesus Christ. The music and acting are both enchanting and thoroughly enjoyable.

Watch this movie a few times -- carefully -- and you'll have more than an elementary grasp of the essential teachings of Christ and the foundation of His Church. That is, apart from the hypocrisy of the Pharisees, Scribes (called lawyers here), and what was ungodly and godly, common Judaism.

I very highly recommend Godspell to anyone over age 15. Kids will find it funny and amusing, whereas it is hoped that older, more thoughtful and open minded people, should come away from this amazing movie both disturbed and greatly exhilarated.

FYI, Godspell was filmed (partly) atop one of the yet-unfinished World Trade Center towers. (Just before their completion, whilst filming Godspell: circa 1972-73.)

May this movie plant a holy seed within you, to grow into something beautiful -- and bear much good fruit.

Movie Review: Your personality matters
Summary: 5 Stars

I'm 37. I grew up in a small town in Southern Mn. I attended Catholic schools for the first 5 years of my life. In 1975 our Seniors turned it into a play. I didn't really get it then, but I did enjoy the music. My older sister ended up doing drugs in her high school years and was sent to treatment. This was our era. I have rented the VHS, but can no longer get a hold of it. My daughter saw it for the first time when she was 8. She was reluctant at first, but was glued to the screen after about 15 minutes. I wanted her to watch the whole thing. Every single time I watch the movie I get chocked up. Especially during the songs. The actors are so genuine, I love it. I have the C.D. in my Alfa Romeo convertible and listen to it often. (So does my daughter). We were lucky enough to see a live play of the Godspell 2 years ago. Seven of us went and everyone loved it. I can be cold, arrogant, quiet, loud, serious, funny, and a number of other things in my life. Watching this movie slows me down. It makes me think about life more,... and the things that are more important. It makes me happily sad.

Movie Review: Loved it then and love it now
Summary: 5 Stars

I first say Godspell at age 14 as a live stage show with the original cast. I was lucky enought to be third row center asle. Needless to say, it made quite an impression on me than and it still does now.
Yes, the NYC landscape is not the same as a stage show and I miss the song "We Beseech Thee" very much.
BUT the movie is still very powerful and very enjoyable. I also have to agree with others here that it surpasses "Jesus Christ Superstar" in my reviews. I could (and have) watched it over and over.
I have had the soundtrack for ever and know all the words. This really annoys my daughter but I love all the songs and they speak of such important issues.
Seeing The World Trade Center Towers really punchs me in the gut but in a strange way it only adds to the message of the movie to know what happens to those two wonders and all the angels who where there on that day in September.
I would buy this again over and over if I had to and I am proud to say that I have passed it along to the next generation, mainly my kids.....

Movie Review: A very Special Movie
Summary: 5 Stars

I must of seen this movie a hundred times, and it never gets old. This movie just brings back so many memories of my childhood, since I grewup on musicals like Jesus Christ Superstar, Joseph and The Amazing Technolcolor Dream coat. But Godspell is the one that I cherish. I grew up on the 1971 soundtrack, and know the movie. Which I know by heart. Victor Garber is fantasic as Jesus, as is David Haskell, and Lyne Thigpen, Robin Lamont, who sang the famous song, DAY BY DAY. This movie have left out other songs like, We Beesech Thee, and Learn Your Lessons well, but they make up for it, with Beautiful City, which has become a favorite of mine. Also, All Good Gifts, sung by Merral Jackson is so moving and wonderful. What is also striking, is the use of New York Skylines. Making The Big Apple, the cast's own personalplayground. And in the showstopping "All For the Best" they cast dances on one of the Twin Towers. Overall, this movie is amazing and joyful. I would advise anyone who is a fan of rock musicals or just fans of musicals in general to see this film.
