Movie Reviews of GodspellMovie Review: Took me back 30 years ... Summary: 5 StarsI first saw the play when it was done at ECU by the drama department in 1974. I loved it then and have continued to enjoy the music ever since. This winter, the same department did a reprise, 32 years later. It was just as good the second time. I enjoyed it so much I decided to check and see if it was ever made into a movie.
I was delighted to learn that it was --- found it on Amazon and decided to try it. When I sat down to watch it I was delighted to see how true it was to the original stage production. It was simple and direct --- and was almost like going to a live performance.
I highly recommend it for anyone who would like to get a feel for what the stage production was like. JGH 3/25/2006
Movie Review: Godspell Summary: 5 StarsI have been looking for this movie for years and finally found it on Amazon.com. It is a great classic musical and I would recommend it to anyone who likes early '70's era musicals. Thank you Amazon for keeping this movie around for people like me.
Movie Review: Great music but... Summary: 3 StarsThis movie has small pieces of the Godspell. The music is great but the images don't help much. It's perfectly fine if you just listen and close your eyes. There are a couple of songs that work fine with visuals, but most of it doesn't.
I think you have to like the Godspell (bible) to like the movie.
Movie Review: Reminisce and sing along Summary: 4 StarsI remember seeing this on TV late at night when I was a kid, and on stage several times after. This is a wonderful and simplistic retelling of the gospel of St. Matthew. The informal settings, dress/costumes, and catchy lyrics make this great family entertainment.
Movie Review: Good Musical Summary: 4 Stars"Godspell" is a well-intentioned effort to modernize Jesus ... and make him "hip". Being hip was fairly important in 1972 (when this movie musical was made) but the sincere good intentions of the movie makers and the well coordinated energy of the performers ... make it work.
You would think that ... a scripted dialog that is composed almost entirely of word-for-word renditions from ... The Gospel According to Matthew ... would tend to bog a movie down ... but there's an awful lot of creativity and imagination employed here ... all in a humorous vein ... and it gives the picture a delightful buoyancy.
The setting is modern-day New York City ... and a quite talented group of performers ... troupe from one urban location to another ... cavorting and carrying on ... in skits ... as they play out each biblical scene or parable.
The music is pretty good ... lighthearted and uplifting ... with three memorable numbers in "Prepare Ye The Way", "You Are The Light Of The World", and "Day By Day" ... a particularly excellent song.
But I think high marks should be given to the people who thought up all those wonderfully funny ideas used throughout the movie ... and also to the performers who, in addition to being good singers and dancers, showed themselves to be adept and deft at comedy as well.
