Movie Reviews of Godsmack - ChangesMovie Review: Unbelievable Summary: 5 Stars
I became a fan of Godsmack because of the fresh and infectuous drum tracks on the album Awake. I don't own any Godsmack CD's but I have heard their stuff. I had a chance to watch this DVD a few days ago, and man was I impressed.
I have probably a dozen other live hard-rock/metal DVD's, and this one is right up at the top of the pack for best live sound and great camera work. Some live DVD editors are guilty of switching camera angles too often and too fast. This DVD will engage singers, guitarists, and drummers, because it balances the footage very well between the band members. The sound on this DVD is awesome, even on a crappy TV speaker. Granted, much of that is just that the band has such a great sound, but the live mix is great.
This DVD features a face-to-face drum battle and two-part drum solos. It also contains a movie, which just follows the band around and gives the viewers an inside track on getting to know the band. I think this is a very good effort of how to produce a DVD. Godsmack is really giving a lot to their fans, not only in unbelievable performance, but also in a well-done DVD.
I don't really need to say much about this band. But their music is fresh and infectuous, and every band member is phenomenal at his instrument. Together they have tremendous energy. The reason I say all of this is because you see it live on this DVD. The sound is so tight and powerful.
This DVD demonstrates a talented and powerful band - live. The sound and their stage presence are so good live I found little (if any) measurable difference between it and their studio work.
Movie Review: Godsmacked me hard. Summary: 5 Stars
There is no way to say this other then this DVD absolutely rocked. The past Godsmack DVD's were plagued with problems but this one is just perfect. The sound quality is amazing, simply put. The only flaw I found was that when you play the movie, Voodoo and Whatever (which Amazon forgot to list here) are interrupted with interviews. Why they did that still puzzles me, but you can watch those two songs in their entirety when you select them in the Individual song menu which basically eliminates the interview or backstage segments. If you like the band at all you will be amazed as you watch them play, it's a solid and perfect performance. Once you open the DVD package you are greeted with a letter from Shannon Larkin telling you the usual stuff on how much the band appreciates the fans and what its like to work in a band but what came across as shocking was that they were almost unable to film this concert for some reason.
Something that may puzzle people is that it's listed as being PG, this is not true as they swear their heads off on this DVD, but not too excessively but enough that its definitely not PG. As I stated before the sound quality and video quality are excellent and if you're a drummer (like myself), Batalla de los Tambores is worth the price of this thing in itself. At first I wasn't too sure about Shannon being a good replacement for Tommy Stewart but this show proves that he's even better, as watching his style of playing is captivating in itself. Buy this thing yourself and prepare to get smacked.
Movie Review: My favorite concert video Summary: 5 Stars
I would have to say that this is far and away my favotite concert video. After reading some reviews I have to wonder what they were watching and listening to. First of all, yes this is a documentary/concert. Why watch the documentary every time it goes into the DVD player. Just go to the main menu and select "songs". All of the documentary portion will be skipped over and you have a full length concert. The only problem is that there will be a short pause between tracks as the DVD searches for the next, but none of the tracks are cut short. Voodoo is played in its entirety.
Now on to the show itself. AWESOME. It is hard to pick a favorite track, but if I had to it would be the drum duel between Sully and Shannon. What I like about this so much is that the entire band is involved. Watching those two trade off drum fills is incredible. More entertaining that watching the master Neil Peart.
Serenity is also an incredible track doing it all acoustic. Re-align? Fuget-about-it. Amazing. There is not a bad track on this DVD. Audio is great. I usually select stereo and play it in 7 channel. Sends more sound to the front mains rather than the center channel. Video editing is great also. Close ups of the band jamming throughout the show.
Don't miss this show. I have friends that when they come over this show is always requested and I never let them down. In Sully's immortal words, "I think it's time to turn this up another notch". Moon Baby. Check it out. You won't be disappointed.
Movie Review: Excellent sound and footage! Summary: 5 Stars
The previous long reviews missed the fact that the DVD allows you to watch just the concert footage or watch the concert with documentary material or watch any individual song. This is a high quality capture of both the sound and the important footage. It DOES NOT make the mistake of showing the singer during the guitar solo, etc like many old rock films. It gives ample coverage of each member playing, as well as, documentary footage of each member. If you are a drummer you will really enjoy the drum material. The drummer Shannon Larkin is an especially interesting performer in his style. Also, one entire song is a dueling drum solo between Sully and Larkin. One review said the solo was improvised; but, that reviewer must not be a drummer. Actually, the solo is highly coordinated and includes tributes to the licks of both John Bonham and Neil Peart. I have not seen the other two Smack videos in which reviewers complain about poor documentary and poor footage and poor sound. Apparently, the group sought to correct those problems with this film which has revealing personal documents, excellent footage, and studio quality sound. A must have for fans. Highly recommended for any musician. PS the name Godsmack is not a slur against God: a "Godsmack" is when God metes out instant justice upon you for doing what you mocked others for (hypocrisy). Clearly, Sully is a disillusioned backslidden Catholic whose lyrics constantly reveal his despair and misery as he searches for God in all the wrong ways and places.
Movie Review: Exceptional live DVD from an amazing band! Summary: 5 Stars
I really like LIVE concert DVDs featuring bands that I have seen live before. I like to somewhat relive the experience of going to see the band live. Most of the time, the bands don't record the actual concert you went to, but they are always similar shows if they record a DVD at a place scheduled for the same tour. In this case, I was able to see this tour back a bunch of years ago and then to see this show they recorded in PA, I was able to relive it again!
If you are a rock fan or a Godsmack fan, you NEED this DVD. It's exceptional. It gives you an inside look at life as a rockstar and life on the road. It's not all fun and games. There is a lot of work that goes into it. But then again, you are living your dream. You get to see exactly what goes into a tour, all the people that are needed to make a large rock tour work, and the heart and soul that go into it. You also get to see one hell of a concert by one of the best rock bands out there. This DVD looks and sounds incredible. You will not be disappointed!
