Movie Reviews of Glengarry Glen Ross

Movie Review: Buy this...
Summary: 5 Stars

This special edition (2 DVDS) of Glengarry is superb. It has the widescreen and full screen versions as well as many extras. Be assurred if you have a multi-region player this is the one to get. I have watched the widescreen version and there is nothing wrong with the quality of picture.
Glengarry is a film about Real Estate salesman - sounds dull - it isn't. Its one of my favourite films and the cast all give stand-out performances:
Alec Baldwin has never been better than his cameo role at the start of this film. The part was specially written by David Mamet for the film version and was not in his original stage play.
"Always be closing!"
Al Pacino is as always excellent, and Kevin Spacey in an early role shows why he went on to become one of the top actors of the 90's.
However, Jack Lemmon tops them all. He plays a desperate man, and consequently resorts to desperate measures in order to try and remain top of the selling game. A marvellous performance that will remain with you long after the film is over.
This film doesn't have any special effects, explosions or super-heroes but I guarentee you this has more memorable scenes than any blockbuster you will watch this year.

Movie Review: Drama and desperation
Summary: 5 Stars

I just find it so amazing that a film with relatively no action can be so powerful and affecting.
"Glengarry Glen Ross" tells the story of real estate salesmen who try everything to close a deal despite poor leads and treats from higher-ups. How far will they go to stay alive in their business? Watch and see as a riveting and sometimes sad story unfolds.
One couldn't have asked for a better cast (greats like Jack Lemmon, Kevin Spacey, Ed Harris and Al Pacino), and the interactions between them are gritty and sharp. Heck, Alec Baldwin is only in the movie for a few minutes and even he manages to make a huge impression on the audience!
Fans of the film can now rejoice that this wonderful movie can now be seen with the picture quality and sound that only DVD can offer. Be sure to look for an "extra special" feature on the second disc: watch the clip of Kevin Spacey on "Inside the Actors Studio" as he and a student reinact a memorable "Glengarry" scene.
All in all, the film is brilliant in every sense of the word. It's well-written, well-directed, well-casted, et cetera. After viewing it, I only had one question. Where were the Oscars???

Movie Review: Wanna swing around to the Chink's?
Summary: 5 Stars

I have never been a fan of Jack Lemmon with the single exception of his stellar performance in the 1955 western "Cowboy" opposite Glen Ford. However, in "Glengarry Glen Ross," Mr. Lemmon's talent shines forth like a supernova. To critics of the film who say real businessmen don't behave this way, I beg to differ. Maybe not in front of customers, visitors or women -- but I speak from over 35 years in the sales field (5 years of it in real estate) when I say that behind closed doors the events portrayed in this film are not as farfetched as the public would suppose. That the events in the film are larger than life, yes; condensed in time, yes. But very real.

The credo of most sales organizations in hiring salespeople is this: "If you throw enough s--t on the wall, some of it is going to stick." Maybe they don't use those same words, but the intent is the same. Sad but true.

So, if you want to have your spirits fluffed up, buy a Disney DVD. If you want to enjoy a fine, well-written drama with an outstanding cast -- buy, rent or swindle a copy of "Glengarry Glen Ross. I recommend it both for closers and losers.

Movie Review: Glengarry Glen F@#%ing Ross
Summary: 5 Stars

Plenty of swearing (the f-word 138 times - way more than the minutes in the movie), not a female character in sight. Glengarry Glen Ross is a chamber piece of the highest order - A Death of a Salesman, a Seize the Day, brought bang up to date to lay bare the Sysiphean masculine endeavours of seedy real estate salesman.

This movie is all acting and dialogue. Set pretty much in two places - an office and a restaurant, Mamet's play is brought to the big screen in as minimalist a way as possible. Clearly the bulk of the budget went on the cast - and what a brilliant scoop. Pacino, Baldwin, Lemmon, Spacey. Guys at the top of their game in a world of cheating, lying, charming and conniving to get the signature on the line of dodgy real estate leads. Pacino as Roma, the slick fast talking salesman was the highlight for me - but also brilliant were Spacey as Williamson the 'Company Man' and Lemmon as Levine - the has been, working his crow's feet expressions, his anxious nibbling on the levers of his glasses, into a foolish gamble that leads to his downfall.

Movie Review: "Always Be Closing!"
Summary: 5 Stars

Glengarry Glen Ross is a superb drama directed by James Foley (At Close Range), and starring a powerful all-male cast including Al Pacino (Heat), Jack Lemmon (Grumpy Old Men), Ed Harris (A Beautiful Mind), Alan Arkin (Edward Scissorhands), Kevin Spacey (American Beauty), Alec Baldwin (The Aviator), and Jonathon Pryce (Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl).

The movie is an adaptation of the stage play written by David Mamet, who also helms the screenplay to the movie version. The thing that drew me most to Glengarry Glen Ross was the dialogue. And since I tried my hand at door-to-door sales, I felt very connected to the characters in the movie, especially Sheldon Levene, played remarkably by Lemmon. The presentation made by Alec Baldwin in the beginning of the film about what it takes to be a salesman hit me harder than an iron fist.

The movie is not just for salesmen (even though I find it mandatory for anybody who's considering a career in sales), but for everybody who appreciates real movies.
