Movie Reviews of Giordano: MarcellaMovie Review: Rare verismo treat. Summary: 4 Stars
This rare opera by Giordano is almost unknown, since the score was destroyed during World War II. The recording took place at Martina Franca, where the opera was staged in 2007, having been reconstructed from the composer's manuscript. While this is not Giordano's best work, it is an enjoyable opera, rich in the melodic content that characterizes Verismo, with moments that remind of Puccini and, in the second episode, Gounod.
The first episode is strongly influenced by La Boheme, with flowing melodies and a lively scenic action. The second scene shows some French influence and one can also perceive, at times, a folk-like style that would later be found in the works of Respighi.
The love duet is lusciously romantic, with Giorgio (the tenor) sounding (and looking) a bit like Pinkerton.
The beautiful orchestral intermezzo shows the melodic gift that Giordano employed more generously in Andrea Chenier and Fedora. The final love duet is a good vehicle for Giorgio and Marcella and brings about the conclusion of the opera.
This is a short opera, at just over an hour, but one that will satisfy all those who love Verismo.
The production values are OK, given that this was clearly not a high budget production. The principal singers do a creditable job, with Serena Daolio in good voice (though she over acts...).
The sound recording is good, but it is, at times, spoiled by the sound of creaking floorboards.
The DVD is recommended, in the hope that more labels will bring back the many little-known operas of Verismo and the Giovine Scuola that have been ignored for too long, to please all those who love operas rich in emotion and romantic melody.
