Movie Reviews of Gigi

Movie Review: Highly Overrated! Mediocre Musical! Even Worse DVD!
Summary: 1 Stars

I first and foremost found this film offensive to women treating them like sex objects for sale to rich men; a little like the reality tv series "The Bachelor", it's sad how some men treat women when as Gigi shows in this film that women are willing to go to great lengths for the sake of the men that they love and yet the men in the film seem to appreciate this so little being content to have trophy wives treating them like chattel. Chevalier actually received a "special" Oscar for his performance but I found the opening sequence while he was singing "Thank Heaven ..." disturbing as the leering look he gave to the little girl was almost paedophilic and sent a chill up my spine. If it was my daughter I'd rip his head off there and then.

You don't have to be feminist to hate this film as anyone with a modicum of decency can see how offensive this film is to good taste. "Yankee Doodle Dandy", "Oklahoma", "Singing In the Rain" before and "West Side Story", "Sound of Music", "My Fair Lady" after are far better examples of superior, classic musicals and this film doesn't deserve to be even mentioned in the same breath as these. Even the other Oscar winner which I thought was very average "An American in Paris" is much, much better than this one. I can only conclude that 1958 wasn't a good year for films to account for the fact that this horror of a film could pick up 9 Oscars. To think that the previous winner a year earlier was the highly deserving and top-10 film of all time "Bridge Over the River Kwai" and that "Ben-Hur" would win soon after you can see the disparity in terms of quality when it comes to Best Film Oscar winners over the years. It would be insulting to name "Gigi" in the same breath as those two Best Film winners mentioned let alone a whole string of excellent musicals that I can think of in addition to the six mentioned here.

This DVD is also an abomination. The standard version is very, very poor picture quality wise and while the widescreen version is much better, the picture quality has not been restored and imperfections such as white spots and that annoying black circles at the top right hand corner abound at least in every other frame. The only reason this is getting one star from me is the Dolby Surround sound quality is better than I expected and is the only redeeming factor here.

Bad film, worse musical and horrible dvd transfer make this totally NOT recommended! You have been warned! Buy at your own risk!

Summary of Gigi

Alan Jay Lerner and Frederick Loewe's 1958 direct-to-screen follow-up to their My Fair Lady was--miraculously--every bit as memorable as that stage smash. Set in fin-de-si?cle Paris and based on a Colette story, Gigi also is about a girl (Leslie Caron) on a lower rung of society who blossoms into Cinderellahood before our eyes and ears. Thank heaven for Hermione Gingold and Maurice Chevalier as her mentors, and Louis Jourdan as her prince. The screenplay writer and lyricist Lerner always said that Gigi's title song was his favorite of all he'd written, and it's easy to see why--"Gigi" is a transcendent anthem to being transformed by love from an unexpected source. The entire score, including "Say a Prayer" (which had been cut from My Fair Lady), "I Remember It Well," "The Night They Invented Champagne," and "Thank Heaven for Little Girls," comprise a sparkling, rare soundtrack recording that stands alone and can be enjoyed and understood by those who have not yet seen the movie, deprived souls that they are. The winner of nine Academy Awards (plus a special Oscar for Chevalier), including Best Picture, Gigi was the last great MGM movie musical and one of the best. --Robert Windeler
