Movie Review: Pure eye candy

I had the immense pleasure catching "Ghost in the Shell 2: Innocence" when it was briefly in the theaters. I never saw the original, let alone consider myself a fan of Japanese animation I must confess. I saw this particular film when I saw the trailer during another movie and was compelled to see it.
The premise of the film revolves around a series of murders commited by female robots that were designed for pleasure. Batou and his partner Togusa investigates who is behind these killings. During the course of the investigation Batou (who is a living cyborg) is haunted by his former partner Major Motoko Kusanagi. The sequel is different from the original "Ghost in the Shell". In fact, I don't think this film is really a sequel. The storyline is more focused oh philosophical ideals like is it really a good idea for mankind to immortalize their own image and soul with androids? Most of the familiar characters from the first "Ghost in the Shell" film is in this movie (including the major) but the premise of the film is completely different and does not pick up where the first film leaves off. There might be some people who might be turned off by all the philosophizing that goes on in the movie but I loved it (as confusing as it was). The animation was totally mindblowing as was the surround sound. I felt like I was right in the film itself because of the surround sound. The music was stunning. I loved the music so much that I bought the soundtrack. If there was any flaws I found with the movie, I guess it had to be the times that I could not figure out what was going on, namely when Batou and Togusa went to investigate their prime suspect in this elaborate mansion. After awhile, I realized what was going on. Despite the confusion, I thought that particular moment in the film was amazing. The animation was nothing that I had ever seen before, a good mix of computer and Japanese animation. "Ghost in the Shell 2: Innocence" is one of my favorite films of this year, if not my favorite film of the year. I can't wait to buy it on dvd. It will be interesting to see how the film translates onto dvd.
