Movie Reviews of Gentleman's AgreementMovie Review: Making America safe for Jews? Summary: 4 Stars
This movie is a strange type of Hollywood classic.
The W.A.S.P. poses as a Jew in the east coast.
The "Gentleman's Agreement" goes back to England (and Europe) and how
that country does prejudice. What this doesn't say that the Jewish people are still discriminated against, but are just, now, safer in the "civilized" parts of the USA? Prejudice isn't just against Jews, but anyone who is "different" enough to deviate from the accepted norm. The Irish and Italians were both discriminated against in their time as emigrants.
One movie about a liberal cause can be forgotten and things go back to their older ways as time goes on.
Even laws don't seem to make a big long term dent in prejudice.
The human race did a very good job of killing all the Neanderthals,
because they were different, but not as good a job on American Indians and Australian Aboriginals.
I liked the movie, but I'm a bleeding heart liberal:
show it in the schools in the south, today,
and you won't be teaching there anymore?
Kill that damned mocking bird before he multiplies?!
Movie Review: Often subtle but always ugly predjudice Summary: 4 Stars
In GENTLEMAN'S AGREEMENT the predudicial reactions of others at the mere mention that someone is Jewish is revealed. Beyond this, we see how far the agreement to 'be a Jew' for the sake of a news story challenges behavior and persecution of loved ones. This is a powerful story about sometimes subtle but always ugly prejudice. Vying for the engaged Peck's affections, Celeste Holm is the gem of the movie.
Movie quote: "They're more than nasty little snobs, Kathy. Call them that, and you can dismiss them too easily. They're persistent traitors to everything this country stands for, and you have to fight them, not just for the Jews, but for everything this country stands for."
Movie Review: REVIEW FOR SCHOOL Summary: 4 Stars
Good movie. I had to watch it for class and I enjoyed it. The conflict is the touchy subject of anti-semitism. It brings strong points to thought. Are jews bad? Some are just like some catholics are bad some muslims are bad etc... etc... People are people..its what we do that makes us bad or good.
Movie Review: Fisrt Jewish Film Summary: 4 Stars
Made in 1947 this film is a little self-conscious at times and bombastic at others. However, it was the first to address a sensitive social issue. I've enjoyed this film for several years and decided to finally purchase it. The quality of the product is not to be questioned.
