Movie Reviews of Genghis Blues

Movie Review: Wonderful story
Summary: 5 Stars

This documentary is a wonderful story of a blind man who picks up a radio to pass time after the death of his wife. After picking up a strange channel one night, he learns to throat sing and gets good enough to compete in Tuva. This documentary turns into a buddy movie with the introduction of Kongar-ol Ondar, the famous Tuvan throat singer. The relationship that develops between these men is definitely something pleasurable to watch. I definitely recommend this movie not only to fans of throatsinging, but also to the type of person who cries at weddings and enjoys watching people get along.

Movie Review: Tuva Rocks
Summary: 5 Stars

I first became acquainted with Tuvan singing by watching a musician perform in front of a train station in Stuttgart. I have been fascinated ever since. I love the work of Hun Huur Tu, and think this story is a great one of achievment and a nice highlight of the culture in Tuva and Paul Pena's musical gift.

If you saw this film and like the music, check out Hun Huur Tu, especially their CD, The Orphan's Lament. It's good stuff.

Summary: 5 Stars

If you want to know how true friendship and human spirit of love can bridge any cultural, racial, or ethnic gap and geographic distance between people even today, you must definitely see this film. I would suggest that college humanity professors consider including this film in their course curriculum. I've traveled around many remote corners of the world and never seen anything more touching than the story in this film.

Movie Review: Genghis Blues
Summary: 5 Stars

This is a fascinating documentary made by a couple of young brothers. They took an obscure subject and brought it to the eyes of the public in a thoughtful and interesting manner. The people, the music, the problems encountered and resolved all make this an unforgettable film. These filmmakers have another documentary out now: Beyond the Call. Don't miss this wonderful and inspiring film.
