Movie Reviews of Genghis BluesMovie Review: Stranger than fiction - absolutely fascinating! Summary: 5 Stars
This movie was recommended to me during a local film festival, and I went along not really knowing what to expect. From the outset, I was captured by the humanity of it all - a miracle of the media - blind muzo Paul Pena, sitting in his LA apartment, listening to his short-wave radio, little knowing that he would later end up winning prizes in the very unusual art form he was hearing for the first time. The movie then follows him to Tuva in north-west Asia, home of the throat-singers, where he makes new friends and learns more about the skill involved, all the while preparing for the annual competition. It's hard not to be impressed by what you hear - the sounds of throat-singing (and the impressive vocal harmonics which result), combined with Pena's more natural blues influences. Well worth a look, even if it's just for the story alone!
Movie Review: Really Neat Video! Summary: 5 Stars
This is one to watch especially if you're a music fan or have been following Rock and R&B over the years. This guy was a hidden gem. As others have said, its a pity a musician of his caliber wasn't given his due. The guy, agent, producer, or whatever he was who screwed up his career by not producing his early album was certainly a piece of work! He deprived the world of learning about an exceptional talent.
Also, it was interesting to see the beautiful country around Tuva, such a remote country and yet the people were surprisingly like us here in the US in many ways. Also, the resemblance to our Native Americans was interesting. Validates the theory of the early migration over the Siberian-Alaska land bridge in my mind.
Watch this video!
Movie Review: AWESOME Summary: 5 Stars
Okay, I admit my dad drug me into watching this movie with him... He just recently ordered a bunch of old documentary's and I was about tired of watching them... This movie started and I just was so into it, he kept talking and trying to make me understand everything but I just wanted him to be quiet and let me watch the movie! I dont really know much about Tuvan music or Paul Pena but I really really think if you like blues music you'll love what this movie has to offer! I was so interested in how they make that "noise" with only their God given body parts... and how a blind man figured out how to speak in Tuvan ... and how he learned how to sing like them... AWESOME AWESOME MOVIE! A++++++ to the people who made this movie happen...
Movie Review: Really good, something for everyone in this doco/film. Summary: 5 Stars
considering that this movie was done on budget, by two inexperianced film makers taking a blind man half way across the world, I can imagine a lot of people would think it was poorly done.
I think its really amazing. I've watched it several times with arabs, english, americans, australians etc all of which peoples interests varied from sports, music, auditing, books, arts, cars and programming. Everyone found something of value in this documentary.
I dont want to go on about it, but if this sounds like your sort of thing go for it. I think its worth it and will refer to this as a present for people (some, not everyone) in the future as well as an active lender on my dvd shelf
Movie Review: Music from the heart via the throat Summary: 5 Stars
I loved this story and music! What a wonderful tribute to friendship, exploration, endurance of culture and talent.
It is hard to believe that the music I heard was coming from a human and not a mix of instruments. The human voice is amazing. Paul has overcome adversity to become an accomplished muscian, a blues singer, and a highly respected throat singer in the Tuvan tradition! He was very brave to travel so far into the far reaches of Asia when he could not see and had to depend on strangers as helpers.
The Tuvan people are amazing, so talented and so open and helpful.
Loved the music and the adventure.
