Movie Reviews of Generation Kill

Movie Review: Just Well Made and Engrossing
Summary: 5 Stars

Whether this series is close to real life and the truth or not is irrelevant, and I wouldn't know anyway.

What this show is, is well made, funny and fantastic, high quality material that remains close to its source material whilst not being afraid to find the story, and the "good television" within it.

The creators throw their audience into the deep end, with a tonne of jargon and army uniforms that, at the beginning, make it difficult to tell characters apart, but overall this adds to the effect that we are seeing this military world through a civilian's eyes. By way of this, I found it gratifying to be treated as an intelligent audience by the shows makers.

The cast is fantastic, and there are some truly GREAT performances, particularly from Alexander Skarsgard (now seen on HBO's True Blood). Just a warning to those fainthearted out there, the language is pretty crude, and very heavily used, and some of the (very) dark humour could be offensive to some. I found that it gave me a deeper understanding of the characters and how they deal with the environment around them...

In all, this is an engrossing and entertaining mini series that is beautifully made and a lot of fun to watch.

Movie Review: Insane, Hilarious, and great Special Effects
Summary: 5 Stars

I had read the book Generation Kill so I decided to purchase the dvd box set. After reading other books such as Band of Sisters, Joker One, and One Bullet Away - this movie seems to accurately portray everyday life -- boredom then sheer terror. Some of the actors in this series are actual RECON Marines who helped the series be as authentic as possible. If you liked or hated Over There - well this series blows that show out of the water in terms of writing and special effects. The acting is incredible - the cast is awesome. The standouts include Alexander Skarsgaard (True Blood) and Stark Sands (incredible actor who we'll hopefully see more of). To say this show is leftist can be seen from some characters but not others as Sgt. Colbert says to Iraqis, "Vote Republican!". Either way I've met people who now want to join the military b/c of the brotherhood b/t the Marines. This show is definitely profane and there are even some offensive moments that I had to fast forward - (the kids writing to the guys) but I still watched it already a dozen times - the funny parts and the action NEVER wear out. Also good extras on the last dvd showing behind the scenes and the "boot camp" the actors had to go thru run by Rudy Reyes and other marines.

Movie Review: Another great HBO miniseries
Summary: 5 Stars

This HBO miniseries documents the adventures of a Marine platoon during the first phase of the Iraq War in 2003 as they rumble around the desert in unarmored humvees looking for the bad guys. The large cast and the density of military jargon in the dialogue can make the story difficult to follow for civilians like me, but the resulting texture and authenticity more than makes up for it. A rather clear picture of the muddled tactical situation and the platoon's variety of reactions to it gradually emerges, and repeated viewings are bound to reveal additional insights. This exceptional film mostly eschews politics in the interest of showing us what the war looks like from the front lines.

The entire cast is outstanding, but special mention goes to the actors who portray the crew of Bravo Company's lead vehicle, who come closest to being the stars of the show. Alexander Skarsgard (who should have been cast in the upcoming Thor movie) portrays the cool, dependable Brad "Iceman" Colbert. James Ransome is Corporal Josh Ray Person, the mouth-mouthed driver who has some really funny monologues. Billy Lush is the chillingly dim-witted Lance Corporal Trombley, who gets off on the violence.

Movie Review: GK review
Summary: 5 Stars

This is a great war mini-series no matter what your political affiliation or thoughts about the current war in Iraq. You will sit through the whole thing with your mouth open the whole time. I am not someone that is into war movies or action flicks but even I loved watching this. There is drama, action, and humor. Be sure to watch the panel at the end with the real marines that this series is based on. You will be AMAZED at how SPOT ON the actors nailed their characters. Especially with Alexander Skarsgård and Brad Colbert considering Alex did not meed Brad til AFTER they were done shooting. I can not recommend this series enough. Everyone should see it just to see what the marines had to go through. This is based on real people and real events. It's not fiction. 2 of the real marines are in the movie the main being Rudy Reyes and he was AWESOME. I admit the only reason I originally watched this is because I am a huge fan of Alexander Skarsgård and he is brilliant in it esp considering he is a Swede playing an American soldier but I must admit after watching it . . . it would still have had the same effect on me without him being in it.

Movie Review: Generation Kill
Summary: 5 Stars

I became interested in this series after reading the best-selling book of the same title. The book was outstanding and HBO's 7-part video/TV series of "Generation Kill" wasn't far behind. Like the book, the videos follow an actual group (real persons are portrayed primarily by actors...but the protagonists are real none the less) of Force Recon Marines as they enter Iraq in March 2003 as a "point" unit until they reach Baghdad and points north. Although the Iraq war would change drastically in the next few years "Generation Kill" is an excellent chronicle of the earliest phases of that war and its subsequent impact on the Marines involved. As a Vietnam combat veteran I have to say that these young Marines are a lot smarter than we were overall in terms of their ability to cut through the BS and see things as they are. And, they are every part as brave. This video series (and the book) are a must see for anyone interested in military history, on the impact of war on young hearts and minds, and the idiocy and incompetence that have accompanied troops into battle since time began. Excellent job by HBO.
