Movie Reviews of Gaza StripMovie Review: Excellence Summary: 5 Stars
This is an excellent portrayal of life in Gaza during the time-frame set forth. Of course, every person has their own experiences, but the movie simply follows some events and incidents such as bulldozing, random shooting, targeted shooting, the use of gasses, and other situations. The producer's comments are also very enlightening such as pointing out how a boy's father went to extremes to prevent his son from going out and throwing stones as opposed to sone people's thoughts that parents send their kids out to throw stones. The movie depicts the frustrations of many Palestinians in the Gaza Strip in a genuine manner. The filming itself as well as the coverage of a variety of situations are 'excellence'. Now if only something would be done to stop the occupation...
Movie Review: Finally, an honest movie Summary: 5 Stars
Finally I'm not watching some CBS special report on Hamas or Islamic Jihad or whatever that gives you the picture of all Palestinians as terrorists. This is a film for the rest, the big majority, the regular Palestinians. Not a generalized movie -- this documentary is really personal, shows life very up-close. There is no narrator in the back telling you what to think. All the words come from the mouths of Palestinians in Gaza. There is also an alt. audio track with the director talking about making the movie, which is good.Really needed a film like this, especially right now, to remind me about the real faces of people behind all those concrete barriers and electric barb-wire fences and media crap surrounding the Gaza Strip. Strong stuff.
Movie Review: A Portrait of Life in the Gaza Strip Summary: 5 Stars
This film allows you to see the daily life of the people of the Gaza Strip, how the current war is affecting the daily routine of their lives, and the more basic conditions of human existence: food, shelter, basic health, and safety. You see the widespread violence that constitutes their environment, the difficulties they face in simply travelling within the Gaza Strip, and the less obvious victims of this incredibly stupid war-- for example, a young boy plays with a "glove" which detonates, killing him and wounding his friends. It's not just rockets and automatic rounds; it's homelessness; despair; landmines; amputations. This is a great way to see the other side of the conflict.
Movie Review: Insider's look Summary: 5 Stars
The director of this film may be the ultimate outsider "insider" -- an American filmmaker showing scenes inside the Gaza Strip that look like he'd been living there for years. Director's commentary on the DVD is a good addition, fills in a lot of question holes. I have watched this DVD about 5 times with friends and it's still having an impact on me. It's uncensored -- so for the faint of heart might be a little bit tough to watch: a kid is shown blown to pieces in one scene and there's a bunch of gunshot wounds, etc. Not for little children. But a valuable document of what the Gaza Strip looks like / feels like. A horrible, terrifying, very good documentary.
Movie Review: Fantastic Summary: 5 Stars
When the movie started, I was expecting a narrator to say something but no, instead direct translation of the palestinian boy was being written underneath the screen. When I watch a movie I may grab glasses to read text at the bottom, but this movie, I felt I had to go back immediately. The main reason it got 5 stars is that when I saw the movie, I felt I was exploring gaza with this young child. Like in cartoon when characters go into a book, here you walk along the kid in gaza. I haven't seen such a unique presentation. WOW. I wonder if I should lobby for my tax dollars to be spent at home rather than to support occupation on the other end of the globe.
